All Internet Browsers fail, yet skype works?

machine is HP s3580a

in device manager it said the network adapter is: NVIDIA nForce 10/100 Mbps Networking Controller

Double click on that and choose update driver, a prompt will appear, choose search internet for driver. See if it updates it.

HP has no network drivers on their site :\

going from what the device manager said under network controllers, i downloaded the driver for the nForce 630i...

and the problem remains..

Okay. So try this. Go back into device manager. Uninstall the driver you just installed, then reboot. Vista will install its own driver. Post back with results.

ok, so uninstalled the driver, rebooted and let vista install its own... pop up in the corner said that it was installing an nforce driver. rebooted again and skype still works, but no browsing capability still.

Your positive you can make a call? Open firefox and type: speedtest.net

The router your using, is the laptop and the machine with the problem connect to it? If so its a wireless access point / switch?

yes, can definitely call from the issue machine using skype, and since an apple software updater notification just popped up, i assume that its accessing the internet too. yet browser won't - speedtest.net didnt work.

ok, so just checked the router (or access point - i dont really know the difference), and apparently the computer with an issue hasnt been assigned an IP address by DHCP. This is odd, as the computer with the issue apparently has an IP of 192.168.0.2 + how could it be making calls on skype without being assigned an IP address?

Whats the laptops IP? in the cmd type ipconfig /all

Assign the machine an IP of 192.168.0.3 and see if it will connect. But first, run this command to get the correct information. In cmd type: ipconfig /all

This command will list: Default Gateway, DNS server, and subnet mask. Use that information plus the IP I gave you and assign it to the pc with the problem.

ok, i tried all that just then and the machine still won't access anything.

unfortunately i've run out of time today to try and fix it, so will give it another go maybe later in the week. thanks for all your help! have a good week
