Administrator Account

How to Enable or Disable the Real Built-in Administrator Account in Vista

information   Information
In Vista, even though you are using an administrator account, you still run with Standard account privileges. When a program or a action by you tries to run with administrators rights, you must first give it permission before it is allowed. This is the User Account Control (UAC). The hidden real Built-in Administrator Account does not use UAC and is like the one in XP with full rights on your computer. For more information, see: Microsoft Help and Support: KB942956
warning   Warning
If you enable the hidden Built-in Administrator Account, it is recommended that you do not use this account all the time since everything installed and running on your computer will also have full access to computer too. Instead, I would recommmend that you use it for administrative purposes only, and then use a Standard or normal administrator user account that is restricted for everyday tasks for better security.
Note   Note

  • This will not delete your current account. It just adds a new account named Administrator that is the real administrator account in Vista.
  • If you do not have any other administrator account on your computer, then you will automatically startup into the built-in Administrator account when you boot into Safe Mode.

Here's How:
2. To Enable the Hidden Built-In Administrator Account
A) In the elevated command prompt, type the command in bold below and press Enter. (See screenshot below)
net user administrator /active:yes
CMD_Enable.jpg

B) Go to step 7.

3. To Disable the Hidden Built-in Administrator Account
WARNING: Make sure you are not logged into the built-in Administrator account when trying to disable it. You must be logged into a normal administrator account to do this instead. It will not work if you try to disable the built-in Administrator account while you are still logged on to it.
A) In the elevated command prompt, type the command in bold below and press Enter. (See screenshot below)
net user administrator /active:no
CMD_Disable.jpg

4. You will get the message, The command completed successfully. If not, repeat the step.
NOTE: If you are still unable to enable the built-in Administrator account from here, then try this again in Safe Mode instead.
5. Close the elevated command prompt.
6. Log off (in Start Menu) and you will see your new built-in Administrator account next to your current account(s).
LogOff.jpg

7. Click on the new Administrator account display picture icon and log on to it.
8. You should create a password for this account for better security.
9. You will then need to set up it's desktop preferences like any other account.
That's it,
Shawn

You will have to have someone that does have an administrator account do it for you if they want to give you full access to the computer. Otherwise it is not possible without reinstalling Vista.

The only other way is to boot into Safe Mode if there is not any administrator user accounts on the computer. If someone (parent) does have one, this will not work.

Sorry, :(

Hello MAtrix, and welcome to Vista Forums.

As a test, enable the built-in Administrator account and see how the applications run while logged on to it. This account has full access. Be sure to read the warning though at the link.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hi,
I've read through the 17 pages here and have a some of questions.

1) Is there a way to give full Admin privileges to another account? When I initialy installed Vista, I created only 1 user account and gave that account admin rights. But now (after 1 week of Vista use) I'm having issues installing some programs. Which is strange as I can install some programs, but not all programs. How do I correct that?
2) I've enabled the 'true' admin account, but would like to copy the desktop from my other account since I've already installed a bunch of programs and they're not showing up on the desktop. Can you copy one desktop to another?
3) If it's possible to give an account full admin rights (ie installing/uninstalling programs, access to all folders etc etc), can I just disable the 'true' admin account and go back to automatic logging on at startup without having to choose an account?

Thanks for the help!

I think you should just disable the UAC which should help 1 and 3. As for two, go to C:\users\(old desktop user)\desktop and copy the files to c:\users\(new user)\desktop making sure to overwrite.

Good Luck.

(UAC can be disabled from the user accounts section in the control panel. I do not recommend it, but its a solution.)

You could also set the prompts to elevate without prompting or auto approve admin but there is no point using UAC if you do that. Just disable it.

Hi,
I enabled the admin acct. and used it for awhile, then disabled it. I moved everything I wanted out of it. When exploring C: Users it is still there along with the other users. Can I delete this admin user? Can I enable it again and if so, will it be the same account? If I do reenable it will it use the same EFS cert.? Can I then delete it in control panel "user accounts" first then disable it?
Thanks
LP
Oh yea it works real well!

Hi Lenny,

Normally you would delete the C:\Users\(User Name) folder after deleting a normal user account, but for the built-in Administrator account you would just leave the C:\Users\Administrator folder as is after disabling it. It will still be the same account with all the same settings the next time you enable it.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hello and welcome. Im afraid explaining any method to gain admin access when you were not given them by the system owner is against the rules on these forums.

If you got a virus its because the system administrator has not protected the system and its their fault, not yours.

You should just tell your dad, he will fix it for you.

Sorry,

Hi everyone. this is my first post on the website and was hoping I could recieve help.
I have a windows vista home premium 32bit laptop that i had in storage for about a year.
I recently pulled it out and after blowing the dust off of it I turned it on only to realize that i can't remember my password to my regular admin account. I have access to a second (standard) account to which I had no password enabled (for when the family came over to visit)

In my user (the admin one) I have my full resume saved and need to get it for a job interview that i have this weekend. It would be imposible to create a whole resume in such little time, so that is my issue.

On XP I would have simply started in safe mode and used the built-in-real-administrator account to get my resume or to reset the password, etc. But as we know, In windows Vista this is disabled for security reasons.

My question is, how can i access the built-in-real-administrator account from my situation? I tried to follow the steps through the standard account but cannot elevate command prompt without the password that I can't remember.

I really appretiate your help as It has me really worried/stressed that as it stands now I don't have a resume available for my job interview. Thanks in advance for your help.
