35% (plugged in, charging) then not charging. :|

I don't know where to post this...
So...
I think theres a problem with my battery
But I don't wanna risk buying a new one. (cost a lot)
So I wanna be sure of what's the problem...

it shows
35% (plugged in, charging) but it never goes up to 36% at all.
But after some minutes...
(plugged in, not charging)
and my battery charge LED indicator is flashing....

I did this Method that I seen here

But well, it still didn't go up to 36%

Some say that I could just take the battery off the laptop...
and still use my battery charger...
But I don't wanna risk damaging the charger...
If that happens, I have two things I need to fix
And I don't think I can take it.

Hello and welcome. I read those instructions. and from your post, i can assume that you did those steps correctly and are still having issues. To further trouble shoot this , how bout testing what happens when you are running on battery and the charge is waaaaay low. Plug it in and see if it charges. and if it just charges to the one level of 35% . If this happens after it ( battery ) has been run down to a low power state and only charges to 35% , then to me that would indicate a battery issue. So, with that in mind, let battery run down and then plug it in and report back how far it charges back up to. Also, note how long it takes it to run down to a state where you need to recharge it.

I concur. Your battery meter may need to be re-calibrated and that is the way to do it. Look in the battery options and see if there is a re-calibration option as there is on my work laptop.

I think what i am seeing here, correct me if i am wrong, is that the only way the computer works is if it is plugged into the wall outlet ? It will not even run off the battery at all, and when it is plugged in, only goes up to 35 % ? Is this correct ? If so, sounds for sure like the battery is shot. Just my thoughts , maybe someone else has some thoughts that may shed more light on this.

Got an HP 530 Laptop with same problem. Original battery had gone and charger was poor, bought both brand new, charger works fine as a mains supplier, but new battery
wont take a full charge. Emailed battery supplier who sent me a free replacement without question. New battery wont take a full charge. Been on quite a few forums (Vista and HP) and this seems to be a common problem. Spoke to a support person at HP who said it was a Vista problem but I cant see any solutions on the Microsoft website. Ive been advised to reinstall XP (Which I prefer) as it is a Vista problem so will try that when I get chance. I`m just sick and tired of being passed from MSoft to HP and back again. I feel a Mac coming on soon!!! Someone please help, thanks

I'm sorry but there isn't anything that we can do about defective batteries. I don't see how this would be a problem specific to vista but perhaps a problem with the Vista version of the power management tools provided by HP. I don't know anything about your laptop or your battery but perhaps there is an alternative. The only thing I could see you doing is to work with HP.

There are hundreds if not thousands of unhappy laptop owners out there with the same problem, battery wont charge. Some say its missing drivers from HP (Denied by HP who say it is a software problem) but the common thread is Vista. Im going to try reinstalling XP from my last desktop to se if that works

Dang, let us know if that solves that issue. From the sounds of your issue, it sure did sound like battery or what townsbg suggested . Hope you get this solved.

Thanks for reply Yard Dog. The worrying common factor is Vista though. The other possible cause would be a hardware failure but that is doubtful with the number of people have the same problem. Do batteries have drivers??

I believe townsbg was referring to the software program that controls the charging functions. You had indicated that you were given a couple of " fixes " from a forum. You could always retry that solution and see if it will work for you, it is quite possible that you did not perform it correctly or it failed to work as it was supposed to.

If none of them are working then are do you know that they aren't defective?

I think that it's a bit premature that blame Vista but I think that it's HP's power manager for Vista.

It sounds as if the battery is shot to me.
However,
As has been mentioned,
There is a charger/discharger function built into some of the bios`s, look at this.
Get someone with a voltmeter to check your AC adaptor to ensure it is suppling the correct voltage.
Leave the laptop turned OFF but left on charge overnight.
If after all of this you still get a dead battery then try a LINUX distro that boots from disk, this will ignor the vista OS and will report on the battery power from a clean OS.

Where do I get Linux thing from and what do I do with it? Heard this from another source. They had the same problem with battery, now run Linux not Vista, no battery problems now.

Look at the Fedora edition;
Fedora Project - Download Fedora and try it.
You will need to download it then burn it to disk.
It is downloaded as an iso so you will need to burn it as an iso (disk image).
I use free iso burner to burn iso`s as it is very easy to use. Free ISO Burner
After you have the disk burnt then you should be able to boot from it.
The fedora page has all the info required.

Understanding battery charging issues
If the notebook battery is not charging or the notebook does not indicate that the battery is charging, the most likely scenario is that the battery itself is operating correctly, but its power management software may have become corrupt. In order to correct the problem, you will need to uninstall and reinstall the power management software by using the Device Manager. This document will explain how to uninstall and reinstall the ACPI Battery listings in Windows Vista, as well as how to obtain and install updated BIOS files, if needed to correct other battery issues.
Uninstalling and reinstalling power management software in Windows Vista
In order to correct problems with the battery's power management software, follow the steps below.
1. Click Start and type device in the search field, then select Device Manager .
2. Expand the Batteries category.
3. Under the Batteries category, right-click the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery listing, and select Uninstall .
WARNING: Do not remove the Microsoft AC Adapter driver or any other ACPI compliant driver.
4. On the Device Manager taskbar, click Scan for hardware changes .
Alternately, select Action > Scan for hardware changes .
Windows will scan your computer for hardware that doesn't have drivers installed, and will install the drivers needed to manage your battery's power. Restart your computer. The notebook should now indicate that the battery is charging.
