vista disconnects from wireless

I have windows vista home premium 32 bit edition and wireless router. Roughly 2-3 times per day the internet connection will stop working and i have to restart the pc after which it works fine again.

I have 2 other laptops and a wireless skype phone connected to the same wireless router and they remain connected throughout so it appears not to be an issue with the router. Windows says there is an error which it cannot repair. I have tried every diagnostic and repair in the network and sharing center - also disabling and re-enabling the wireless connection, manually switching the wireless card on and off, manually restarting the router.

Nothing seems to work apart from restarting the laptop after which it works fine until the next time. There doesn't appear to be any correlation between what im doing at the time and when the connection breaks either.

any help much appreciated

I have a newer HP Laptop running Vista and have the same exact problem. Tried fixing router. Problem is definitely not with router. My sister is running a Apple and has no problem. I called HP tech support and they weren't able to help. Updated all drivers and firmware. Also called router tech support but they couldn't help either ( didn't think they could but thought it was worth a shot).

I would love the answer to this question.

Hi user1,

Interference from cordless phones, microwaves, tvs and a few hundred other devices can cause wireless to dropout...

What channel and security settings are you using? How many computers are connected to the wireless and how long + often does it dropout?

Thanks for the reply. The main issues isn't so much disconnecting -- which is annoying- but the fact that after i disconnect my wireless adapter seems to be dysfunctional. In other words, after it disconnects, i can't reconnect to my network or even view any of the networks around me (there are at least 8 or 9 usually). Using the "repair" function gives me an error that says that their may be a problem with my wireless adapter. The only solution i have been able to find is to restart the computer. It works every time. Just don't want to restart every 20 minutes:)

There is a cordless phone near the router so I could try moving that. I tried to routers: a DLink and a Linksys. Both have the same problem.

I have basically one computer connected to a WEP secured network. Channel is 11, I think. I use DHCP cloning from Comcast cable modem. Problem happens anywhere from several to many times a day and seems to happen more frequently when I am streaming or downloading.

Hi Abram,

This sounds like interference from an external source, i.e. your cordless phone. Cordless phones are a bit like a halfway house between a wired phone and a mobile phone. Like a mobile, they are in constant contact with the base unit by transmitting and receiving constantly, but unlike a mobile they are restricted in operating area. Unfortunately, the frequency used can sometimes interfere with wireless Internet reception. The solution? Ideally, remove the source of interference, i.e. remove the phone. Alternatively, change the channel number of your Internet connection. At the same time, if your router can handle WPA or WPA2, I strongly advise that you enable it as WEP, whilst better than nothing, is weak and no longer considered secure.

I experience this issue with a new dell inspiron laptop. my dell latitude d820 with vista ultimate never drops once. THe inspiron with vista home premium will almost never reconnect to the wireless router without resetting the adapter and manually rejoining. I have no rfi external issues as the d820 works fine. I have yet to fine a work around. I am still working on it after two weeks with no luck.

Using linksys with dd-wrt firmware. fwiw

To check for interference I switched off the phone from electricity but the problem stays. Seems to be mainly when lots of info is downloaded at once (large files). Streaming radio channels was OK. Just a quick on the net shows you a large group is suffering from the same glitch. I had the concern with a USB wireless toggle. But the Linksys in the system maintain the same problem. Sigh.....O yes: completely legal systam, full install Vista, no upgrade version.
Disappointing, very disappointing this is.

What model Linksys device do you have? It might be possible to upgrade to DD-WRT firmware like myself and others are using :geek:

:oMistake! No linksys but Sitecom PCI adapter MiMoXR WL-151. I selected that one for the Vista proof symbol on the box.

I have the same problem since I bought a Dell XPS - M 1530 - with Vista on it. Prior to that I had a Dell Inspiron 510m with XP Pro on it and no problems.

Linksys router - the same as before so why the problem now? We have no more cellphones, PCs or TVs in the house than before!

Any ideas?

Yup - make sure you have the latest drivers for the new Dell. just because the computer is brand new doesn't mean all the drivers are.

Hi all,

I have essentially the same problem. What is up w/ this. I have a custom build w/
EVGA 780i SLI Mobo
Vista Home Premium x64
And have tested out 2 wireless cards now.

1st card D-Link DWA-552 802.11n 300gb/s card that connected via PCI. Simply having the card in my system would lock up everything after 10mins (approx) and every attempt to connect to ANY wireless network would lock vista. Had this card in an old build w/ XP and worked w/ no problems.

Decided to attempt w/ a different card:

2nd card Hawking HWUN1 300n that connected via USB. Wonderful device that allowed me to connect to any network w/ excellent signal strength. While playing COD4 or doing any downloading, the wireless cuts out. I can no longer connect to any network and sometimes cannot see my network. If I unplug the device and plug back in I can get another 10-20mins before the connection disappears again.

I use a D-Link DIR 655 wireless n router. No security.

2 other laptops are connected to the network (one via D-Link wireless adapter card and one via an internal wireless b/g card) neither at any time lose connection. There are no cordless phones in the house. ALL the latest drivers/firmware have been installed.
Kind of hard to play COD4 online when you can only play for 15-20mins at a time (<10mins w/ short "connection interruptions" if Teamspeak is running).
I have attempted to take off the firewall and disable the power save function of the cards. Neither helped. I'm beginning to suspect there is maybe 5 total wireless cards that work properly w/ vista. Is there anything in vista that can be enabled/disabled to remedy this?
All wired networks (Internet and PC 2 PC) work flawlessly. Overall Computer works flawlessly. This is the only (biggest) problem I have. ANY help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

Hey,

Gaming over wireless will always be laggy, its the nature of the protocol so if you cant live with that then use Ethernet...

The locking is caused by your wireless card drivers so find the right ones from the card manufacturer and you should be right...

Use this program to stop the lag spikes once you have the right drivers...

I have exactly the same problem. Random dropouts from internet / network. The dropouts mostly occur when I'm doing something local on the machine. As long as I am active on the internet, I seem to stay connected. I never had this problem with XP. (My wired DELL desktop with VISTA has never had the problem) The problem only occurs with my laptop with the wireless connection.

Note that this laptop is a high end machine:
Alienware Area-51 m9750
I even upgraded the OS to VISTA HOME PREMIUM SP2, (The machine came with SP1, and had the problem) Nothing changed with SP2.

As a point of possible interest, this past weekend I did not have the problem when I had a P to P file sharing application, (BEAR SHARE), running in the background. That seemed to keep my connection alive.

While searching a bunch of forums today, I ran across the following, which solved the problem for this user. I did NOT try this yet, so there are no guarantees. I will try this next weekend when I have time.

This DID SOLVE the connection loss problem for at least 1 user:

"I think I may have fixed this... and posting here for those that may have a similar issue in future.

Firstlly to recreate this readily, all I had to do was copy a large file from across my network using WiFi and the problem would occur. This ruled out the internet connection (and therefore router MTU settings?).

This then meant that I started suspecting my wireless card could be the issue (or that the Netgear router did not work with the card). I borrowed a DLink USB Wifi adaptor and used that in preference to my built in Intel one and things were great! ...now I was getting somewhere.

Anyway, as I was running out of options to change/upgrade (my drivers were up to date etc.) I thought I would just uninstall (without deleting) my Wifi Device Driver (Computer Management -> Devices)... and see what happens. Anyway, after doing this and after turning off the Wifi switch and back on again, the new hardware detection wizard kicked in and re-installed this driver for me... lo and behold things are working great since then! Hallelujah! Hope that I have not spoken too soon, but fingers crossed this should be the end of the matter.

I always have problems disconeting while using lynksis :( however since my Airpace i have never had any problems since even when vista reports only yo be on a local connection

For folks losing their internet connection intermittently, if you're using WEP encryption, try WPA and better yet WPA2. I've read that WEP can cause your problem.

Same problem, have had it since I fired up Vista X64, in fact I have tried 3 wireless cards and all come to the same "fail". I have even messed about with the IPV6 setup/disable nothing...All my other computers in the room running XP have never had a problem. I have now had to wire up using ICS connections through an XP machine, I am told that Win 7 has not got this problem - so I am going to upgrade, which is something I hope to avoid.
