help with Windows resolution 1680x1050

Hello. I'm new here, but I need help. My Windows vista crashed and I restarted. Suddenly the position screen was now on the upper left and there was a black bar or boarder on the bottom and right sides of the screens. I went to Control Panel - Appearance and Personalization - Adjust Screen Resolution. From there, I changed the resolution from the default "1680x1050 pixels" to "1280x1024 pixels''. The screen now positions properly, but now the screen and text looks stretched and the resolution doesn't look as good.:mad:

Here's how my computer screen now looks like. the left and upper parts of my screen always disappears and I have to lower my resolution to view the whole screen.




What am I doing wrong? I need help! I would surely appreciate it,

The manual for your monitor will tell you how to center. It is usually easy and user friendly. No manual, you can get one from the Mfg online.

Help! :cry: My Windows screen has moved to the way left with black bars at the right and bottom of my screen. I was using software such as Sypbot and a free registry cleaner to clean up my computer and it happened again! I can barely view the Start menu. :o I need help to solve this!:mad:

I followed your advice, but the "Change Settings" button is greyed out. My current display driver does not allow changes to be made to hardware acceleration settings.

I tried a system restore, but that didn't work.

I normally set my computer's resolution setting at 1680 by 1050 pixels. I lowered my resolution to 1280 by 1024 pixels to make the black bars disappear, but the screen soon looks stretched horizontally with bigger fonts and the picture doesn't look right.

The black bar at the right side of my computer screen is so annoying!:sa:

Click on the desktop again

set custom DPI.

Mine is set at 125%, set it there. If not good experiment.

Experiement go to 125 like mine. If you need more try it. Just be sure you remember how to set it back if it gets worse.

my monitor is Generic PnP Monitor on ATI Radeon HD 3650
I can go to 800x600, 1024x768, 1152x864, 1280x768, 1280x1024, and 1680x1050 pixels
I want to go to the last on (highest res) but that's where i see that black bar! I don't see the black bars with the other res options, but the screen gets stretched horizontally.

the other option in my Display Settings is the Default Monitor is 800 by 600.

Are you trying to get bigger fonts? Is that why you are changing the resolution?
If so put back the default there are better ways to increase the font.

No. I don't want bigger fonts. I want to set my resolution at 1680x1050 but I keep getting a black bar at the right side of the screen and it pushes away the left side of my desktop that some icons (including the start menu) are not seen. When I lower the resolution to 1280x1024, the black bar is gone and the desktop is adjusted properly, but the screen is now stretched out horizontally. I want my resolution at 1680x1050 without the black bars at the bottom and right sides of my computer screen (see picture that I posted in my first post.)

I understand what you are trying to do. I just am trying to find out why. The suggested resolution is considered ideal by the monitor mfg, because it works the best. I do not know how to avoid the problems that you are having at the higher resolutions. Possibly, if I knew why, I would be able to offer a work around.

When my resolution is set at 1680x1050, the fonts and desktop icons are much more clearer than when my resolution is set at 1280x1024, in which the screen looks distorted horizontally and the fonts look a bit more blurry, which is what I don't want.

I've gone online to find alternate sources to this problem, but so far I have not been able to find any solutions.

If you don't have anymore advice to help me solve this problem concerning the black bar on the right side of the screen, I understand. Thank you for your help, anyway.

Seeing that you have an ATI gpu and you have the Catalyst Control Center installed (CCC), see if theirs anything causing the desktop scaling to be abnormal under such resolutions as well.

I think I've figured out what's keeping my screen shifted to the left w/the black bars at the right side of my screen. Again, I'm not 100% positive that it's the problem.

When I scroll down my Screen Refresh Rate if my resolution is 1280x1024 I have a choice between 75 Hertz, 70 Hertz, and 65 Hertz with 75 Hertz as the default setting.

When I scroll down my Screen Refresh Rate if my resolution is 1680x1050, I have only a choice between 60 Hertz and 59 Hertz with 60 Hertz as the default setting.

Could refreshing the Screen Rate help shift the monitor screen to it's proper place?

Another possible solution that I had was auto-adjusting the computer screen, but I don't know how turn on that in Vista.

I just found a temporary solution to my problem.

I clicked on Catalyst Control Center. Then I clicked to Monitor Properties 0 and then to Adjustments. From there, there is a picture box below the words "Screen Position and Size." I pressed the "Right" arrow continue, forcing the screen to shift more to the right. I shifted the screen enough that the black bar that was previously on the right side of the screen has disappeared. (horray!):D:party:

However, I do have concern that I were to lower my screen resolution, then there would be a black bar on the left side of my computer screen since I shifted my screen to the right.

As long as this solution serves you well for now, what type of connector are you using in the first place (DVI,VGA,HDMI)? I use a Dell 176fp (17" 4:3 screen) on another computer and when i change the refresh rate from, say 70 to 72 hz, it bumps up the desktop about an inch from the bottom of the screen.

Now this is while using a VGA connection. If your using the same thing, then adjust the image size with your monitor's controls. But if your using a DVI or HDMI connection, then i guess your solution works too.

As for the settings you made in the CCC, it may effect lower resolutions, but try it and see. If so, then you have to take the liberty to adjust everytime i guess. but usually DVI and HDMI connections are smart enough to control image sizing.

I have a Windows Vista Studio XPS from Dell (can't remember the exact number)

As I said in an earlier post, when my resolution is 1680x1050, I have only a choice between 60 Hertz and 59 Hertz with 60 Hertz as the default setting.
