CPU fan not respondng error

Hello everyone,

I have a question regarding CPU fans. I have a new computer (Q9550, 2.83 GHz) and I often get an error on start up that says CPU fan not responding. I had a couple of other issues with Nero 7,etc. so I had it in to the place that built the system. They told me there was nothing wrong with the fan, but I still get this error on occasion.

Would anyone have any suggestions for me. Im a novice comuter user, so Im not sure where to go witihn the system to find out if the fan is actually running or not.

If the CPU fan was not running you would fry your CPU very quickly. You could try running a utility, usually available from your Motherboard manufacturers site (look in your manual) to monitor CPU temperatures. If they are running hotter than the recommended settings, get the fan checked or replaced

I'd reccomend using Real Temp to monitor temps:

Real Temp - CPU temperature monitoring

Under settings,set the TJMax to 100 instead of the default 95. It's your load temps (maximum temperatures) you should be most concerned with.

If your getting high temps ie 70, 80, 90+ then I'd definitely open the case and visually inspect the fan.

Where is the error being reported. In the BIOS screen or Windows?

The error appears on the BIOS screen, when my computer is first booting up and it does not happen all that often, say once every 10 start ups.

Thanks for the link; I'll have to play aruond and try to figure it out.

Out of curiosity, would it make a difference f the error was occuring in Windows?

If it's appearing prior to Windows, then the error is being reported by BIOS. There is probably a setting "CPU Fan Fail Warning" or simialr setting that is enabled. It could be a faulty sensor, BIOS hiccup or the fan is indeed periodically failing. When you next get the error, try going into BIOS and checking the reported temps and fan speeds there. But monitoring temps and fan speeds in Windows with 3rd party apps would be your best bet.

Windows itself doesn't give those errors, only 3rd party apps that monitor fans do. If it is just a BIOS hiccup, an BIOS update may fix it or you can turn the warning off, but only once your certain your temps / fan is fine Or you could just ignore it

Hi Brigglesworth,

Next time you start your PC, enter your BIOS by pressing the appropriate key. Goto the System Health tab and monitor it for, say, 15-20 minutes. Does the speed of the CPU fan fluctuate wildly? Make a note of the highest and lowest speeds you see. Does opening and closing your optical drive make any difference? Try inserting a disk - whilst the drive is spinning up, it will draw extra power from the 12V line. If, by doing this, the fan speed drops (especially when the optical drive is spinning up), then I would suspect a PSU problem with power line regulation and stability.
