mystery of defragmenter

I click the "defragment now" and instead of freeing up a few Gbt of HD,
I have now 3G Less. As soon as I hit the "defrag now" (I have always
had it run as scheduled) , my HD started to reduce by alarming speed
before my eyes. The defrag took hours, 4 hours, by the end, i ended up
less than 10G, 7 of which came back out of nowhere the next day, but 3
did not.
So I did defrag and ended up 3G Less HDS than before.

Could anyone explain , please?

It may be your system restore creating restore point, or you can do disk clean up. I also believe that system restore is set to use about 10% of your hard drive. if you need to free some space you can go to my My computer, right hand click on your main drive letter, disk clean up, more options.
Other option is that you have virus telling windows that it is running out of free space.

Could you tell me what to do again? So, I open "computer" and right click... what?
If I click this HD icon, it just opens files

Could you also tell me how to adjust the system restore?

Thank you for the tips. You have introduced me to this dizzying relm
of Vista advanced users. :DWow, I need to take this one by one.

Thanks to you, I managed to get back to pre-defrag level of HD,
if no more free space.

One thing I noticed thogh is it is now more crash(freeze) prone than before.
Since you are Vista guru, pls let me ask you this.

Is there anything I can do to alleviate this crash(freeze) problem
(excpet for, as I know, not to use many programs or not to open
many windows at once)?

Believe me, there are people that hang out here that have forgotten
more than I'll ever learn about these machines ...

There are things you can do to alleviate the fear of crashes.

First, use this tutorial http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/95398-disk-management-shrink-partition.html?ltr=D to create another partition on the HDD.
Then after you get it created save all your data to it instead of the C: partition.
Don't put anything on C: you don't want to lose; then when (not if) you have to
re-format and re-install the C: partition you won't have to try to move anything.

Second, use this tutorial http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/100133-backup-files.html?ltr=B to create backups of all your data.
Use this to backup all the data on the new partition, this way you'll still have
access to the data if the HDD fails.

Third, when you start an action let it finish; don't try to stop something before it finishes
what it's doing. I've learned this the hard way and still cause many problems this way.
