Updates from one computer to another...is this possible?

Is it possible to acquire Vista Updates from one computer and transfer these to another one?

The reason I ask is because my Vista machine only has a dial-up connection, but my work machine has broadband.

So, can I 'grab' the updates on my work machine, save them to a USB or ext. hard-drive and transfer/install on my home machine?

Note: my work machine is a Mac!

Thanks for that! I'll look into it with a bit of caution because of all the stuff I've read here and elsewhere about updating windows...

I wonder if it's a case of don't fix what's not broke?

Vista Dan, I just get a bit nervous installing updates when my computer's working well. It might just be a case of lots of bad luck, but it seems installing official updates from MS are not without their problems. Yeah, call me paranoid or naive, but what's the point of updating Vista when everything is fine? Yeah, I've read that the need to update is connected with better Internet security, etc. But because I'm just a lowly dial-up user and I have good anti-virus, do I need that extra security? The bottom line is that if something doesn't work I'll consider updates...besides Windows Defender seems to take forever to update, so I don't bother.

I've had that feeling too. I've had no security issues lately on my computer and I've been having to update everyday which is strange. What's the point in updating (when your computer is in perfect condition) when all its doing is taking up your hard drive space?

Your not getting just Security updates in windows update, its also performance, reliability updates and bug fixes...If Microsoft have to update a patricular file they review the entire code for problems and appy it as a "batch" patch for more then one problem...If Microsoft has to change the ordering of some system routines to fix a secuirty issue or make the code more efficent or run with better performance then Microosft updates the MSDN with that infomation to allow developers to update their software for the required changes aswell...

Eventually down the track you will have issues with newer software if a file has yet been updated with the new code since developers expect your machine to be patched with the latest updates

If one patch causes problems then uninstall it but installing the patches helpes Your Computer, Developers and applications run correctly for the windows system

^Something must be wrong with my computer because no matter what I do I get strange error messages when I try to install Group Policy Client update and Security Updates.

No its not a virus. I think it was my Operating System itself. My computer was optimized when I got it, I dont know how, but the people that sold it to me miraculously lowered sys. reqs. and removed useless things in my computer.

It would be nice if MS provided free - yes, free - CD/DVDs of their updates once in awhile. Perhaps, every year or so for people like myself who are still stuck with dial-up. Failing that, I could go as far as pay for postage...

They do with Service Pack releases, You can order CD/DVDs with the latest ServicePack from Microsoft for about $12 postage
