Hey guys, I recently built a computer with Vista Ultimate 64bit.

I absolutley love it and have only had two problems.

LOCKED UP
Randomly the computer will just lock up.

No graphical glitching, no errors, no nothing. In fact if you just came in the room and looked at the screen everything would appear normal.

This happens when doing any manner of things. It has happened when playing games, surfing the net, working on a document or even when the computer is left on overnight.

Its very sporatic too. I have gone a whole week without it happening with turning the computer on and off. I have also had it happen a few times within a few hours. Sometimes I can leave the computer on for a few days and it wont happen, sometimes it will happen right after I have signed in.

Its weird, I have never been doing anything specific whatsoever.
Again, there is nothing that happens that shows it, its as if the mouse and keyboard just stopped working but its not the mouse and keyboard as I have tried others and have tried hooking other things up and windows is basically just stopped. The only way to fix it is if I turn the computer off by holding down the power button.


Boot Up
This is a separate problem than the one above.
Almost every single time I boot up my computer and my bios thing has run and right before the little Vista loading bar pops up it will stop booting. Black screen indefinately.
I have to turn the computer off and then on again and it always goes through on the second time.

This problem happens when I turn the computer on for the day and also when I restart after having it on for a while.


Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Vista Ultimate 64bit
EVGA 750i FTW Motherboard
E8400 Core 2 Duo 3.0 GHZ
EVGA 9800 GTX

Carbonite, first off do not bump your thread as this is againts the rules of this forum. Post deleted. Look in your error logs and performance logs to see if there is any errors that may be showing up. Have you got all updates installed? If you have just built it, it may take a small while to settle down.

Ok, sorry about the bumping. I didnt know of the rule yet and figured it would be ok since it was a while since I posted it.

Well actually I built it a couple months ago now. I am just getting to the point where I want to try to fix it as before I was just dealing with it.

How is it I check the error logs?

I do have all updates installed and every driver and even my bios is up to date.

Click on start.
Right click on computer and choose manage.
Click on continue.
Click on event viewer.
This will give you access to all of the error logs as well as other useful info.
Also click on the reliability and performance logs. Expand it then look at errors and what the faulting modules are.
These tools are very valiable at trying to work out if it is software or hardware.

Also,

Run a memory test.
Do a disk check.
Check your bios to make sure it has not lost any settings( it can happen) the battery may be bad on the motherboard.
Check your data cables are connected snugly.
Click on start, type cmd into search and run sfc

Yes, I know how to expand. Just dont know what to do with the information. I dont know what these errors are or how to fix them.

Also, I pulled up the performance like you said. What exactly am I supposed to get out of that? Its just monitoring the speeds of all my stuff.

Ok you have my permission to bump this thread so I can look at it in the morning

Anytime you get erratic behaviour the first thing to check is DRAM memory like Roy said. Run the memtest which is a boot option. press F8 for boot menu before vista starts.

Well, F8 wasnt the right thing for me I dont think.

Ran a memtest though and to no avail.

So I still need to figure this out.
