vista shutting down problem

Hello there

I'm having problem with Vista.
when I'm trying to shut it down, my computer walks into something like sleep (tho I can't wake it from it)

what exactly happens is:
my monitor lets "beep" 3 times and goes black (as it usually does when it's turned off), but power LED on monitor stays green (after turning it off should be yellow)
on keyboard num lock/caps lock/scroll lock legs keeps blinking
power led on PC stays green
all fans are working
and I hear that HDD has stopped working (at least I think it is )

I've run safe mode and tried to shut it down from there, everything stays exactly same, with one exception
monitor doesn't "beep", isn't going black, but stays on "shutting down" screen which is frozen (animation of "work in progress" circle has stopped)
rest is as described above

it doesn't matter whether I shut down from windows or just after system start before even logging in (both in normal and safe mode)

I've tried uninstalling GPU drivers, installing newest MB drivers, restoration to the 1st point possible, still happens the same

anyone had similar problems or can provide me some solution to this?
I'm thinking about reinstalling vista and then installing soft and drivers one by one checking if it still happens (or even if it happens on fresh vista, which I think wasn't broken)

Sorry about your problems goki. I'm not going to be much help but hopefully the more knowledgeable members of the forum will be here to help soon. You've checked everything i personally would have (psu, potential bad ram, potential failing gpu..obviously not the culprits) so i'm curious about the answer to your problem too. I would also( and i'm sure you already have) make sure the cpu fan is working ok and maybe try a different monitor and recheck sata connections.

I'm really curious about this and hope you get it fixed soon.

While I've also never encountered this issue, you might try these tutorials which might provide you with some solutions:

@.Joe: thanks for link, though those tutorials didn't help with this matter, I've learned some useful things from there

I've seen some people with similar problems on other forums, tho updating MB/gpu or even dvd drivers in one case did help for them

thing that is most disturbing me is that I'm 51% sure that when I installed vista for the first time everything was ok and problem did occur sometime later. as fresh system, I did many things at once, installing some soft, changing power options and then *poof* computer won't shutdown
but after format and reinstall it happens too on fresh system

I'll wait for sp1 now and see if it changes anything

I was hoping there would be something in there that would help. In addition to the tutorials, I learned about some settings in the BIOS which may or may not be related to your situation. You'll have to find a resource for your BIOS since each one is different. But generally speaking, I'd be checking the BIOS for a "wake on lan" setting. In my BIOS, there was a related setting, which I disabled. Use caution when making adjustments in your BIOS. An incorrect change can render your PC unusuable. Only attempt looking into your BIOS settings if you are comfortable doing so. I'll also be checking with some friends of mine to see if there are any other software solutions that can be tried.

ps: To access your BIOS, turn off, then restart your PC. There should be a prompt (very brief) that says something like hit F2 (or another key) for system settings before the windows screen comes on. But be sure to find a resource for your BIOS before attempting to change any settings. You'll want to know what's in there first. I'll mention it again, changing BIOS settings incorrectly can render your PC unusable. Be careful and proceed only if you are comfortable doing so.

Let us know if you find a fix, and I'll keep checking around.

I'm still looking around for possible solutions. I found a couple of other things to check into.

1. Are you using a wireless card to access the Internet? I've read that sometimes wireless cards cause this kind of issue.

2. On your video card, you mentioned installing the latest drivers. Have you tried rolling back the driver to an earlier version?

Let us know if either of these affect or resolve your issue.

2. I did test it on:
- windows default drivers (fresh vista installation)
- newest nvidia drivers

Ok, the wireless angle is resolved.

For nvidia, try downloading a rollback driver:

ForceWare Release 163

This is the version 163 driver for Vista. Rolling back the video driver was also mentioned as a possible solution. Try that and I'll keep looking to see what else is available.

Maybe one of our fellow members has some more specific wisdom about this kind of issue and your comments would be welcome

I haven't given up. There's still some voodoo out there, it's just a matter of finding it.

@geezer10: as far as I remember I haven't done any changes in bios, so it happened on default settings
tho I'll try that when I get back to home

@geezer10: I was kinda busy today so I just tried setting bios to default (via menu in bios) and it didn't help

I doubt that jumper reset will solve it, but I can try tomorrow
