This query concerns Corel Paint Shop Pro X (PSP) which has been running happily for years on my Vista PC. Since another program caused a BSOD recently, PSP has refused to open. The other program is one no-one here will ever have heard of, it is simply a front-end to an Access database of limited interest, and the source is trustworthy, but amateur. I have the same program running happily on my Win10 laptop, but it won't now run on the Vista machine (although it used to).
So, if I click one of the PSP icons I get an hourglass symbol which goes away eventually without anything happening. There are no error messages. Also nothing happens when I click on an image file, but in that case I sometimes get a message that the file xxxx.jpg cannot be found, despite the fact that xxxx.jpg is visible on the screen as a thumbnail in the File Explorer window, and other programs will happily find and display it. Yesterday I tried uninstalling/reinstalling from the original PSP disc, it made no difference. I tried reverting Vista to a restore point prior to the BSOD, and uninstalling/reinstalling again. PSP then worked fine.
After switching on this morning, PSP is refusing to communicate again, the same problem as before. I have looked in Task Manager, and although it shows no instances of PSP running, there is an entry under the Services tab for each time I have tried to start it, three so far. Does this give any of you clever people a clue as to what might be going on, please ?
Corel would not offer any advice. They no longer support version X. They did try to get me to buy the latest version, whilst pointing out that it will not run on Vista.
So, par for the course then.
I have a suspicion that this is not a problem with PSP as such, rather it may be something to do with Windows, maybe damage caused by the BSOD ? I have not tried every single program on the machine to see if they will open, but all the major ones do - Outlook, Webroot, Google Chrome, Word... I have even revived an old copy of Photoshop Elements in the absence of PSP and it runs OK, but frankly I much prefer my PSP which I have used since it was shareware. I know just what to do to have the effect I want without having to think about it.
Thanks for any help.
