New Member
hi, im trying to move or copy 5 family videos from one external hdd to another, sizes range from 160 mb to 820 mb, but am getting a 'cannot read from the source file or disk error' on all files , i can move them from one folder to another on the same hdd without any problems, but not to any other hdd connected to my computer. i even created a new folder on the hdd and moved the files to it then tried copy/move to another hdd but didnt work! also renaming the files didnt work! I can watch the videos without any issues

I tried to copy them from the command prompt but came up with 'data error (cyclic redundancy check) :mad:so i done a chkdsk and it didnt come up with any bad sectors!:sarc: i also did the 'copy to nul' command and that worked with no problems

any help wud b mosted appreciated as they are videos of my children when they were younger!

many thanx in advance

dom

Hello DOM,
Try this, make a new folder on your desktop and copy all the files from the external HDD to there, then try and transfer them to the other external HDD by copy and paste.

Hope this helps, good luck and post your results.

Just guessing, at this point, but can you tranfer to a DVD or finger drive etc and then to the other HD?

How about this. Create a new user account. Then using easy tranfer, tranfer to new account. I am sure that will work. You can then give permissions etc to your regular account. I suggest the new account because I do not think you can just tranfer a few files with Easy Tranfer, but you may be able to.

hi, that didnt work either, it came up with 'data error (cyclic redundancy check)
the files are on an external hdd, looks like the hdd is on the way out, in which case why didnt chkdsk pick up the bad sectors and how come the 'copy to null' worked from the command prompt?

thanx anyway

Sorry to hear about the HD problem. I hope you do not lose your documents. Sometimes a HD fails with little or no warning. Chddsk does not always indicate a problem. If I can think of a way to save your treasured memories, I will post.

Don't write off the HDD's just yet, go to the manufacturers site and download their diagnostic software and test the drives, this will tell you one way or another if the drive/drives are on the way out.

There are many members at this forum that enjoy helping others with their computers, but the greatest satsifaction comes from memembers, like yourself, who through words, show so much appreciation. Right now, I do not know who has the best feeling, you because of my help, or me because of your appreciation. Thanks and come back often.

I was ready to move on to help others when I realized that I might have more information for you.

You have almost learned the hard way that you have treasures on your hard drive that cannot be replaced. My advice is go out buy an external hard drive, under $100 and then download Paragon. Make a copy of your hard drive. You will never have the feeling of panic that you experienced, today, again.
