What is components_previous for it is Corrupt

Hello, I have a file with the following location "C:\Windows\System32\config\components_previous " and it is 28,672 KB. the file was created on 9/11/2009 (no lie) and appears to be corrupted, since I can not copy or move it. I use Genie Backup Professional 8.0 for backups and corrupt file locks when it gets to this file.

Questions: what is this used for? Can I delete the file without doing damage to Vista? Can I rename the file, reboot the computer and have Vista survive?

I am running Vista Ultimate with all recent service packs and updates.

Components_previous is a former registry file -exactly COMPONENTS file.If ever time you use system restore to current registry files are added "_PREVIOUS" to name and from system restore backup are extracted another registry files which replaced current.If you ever time you used system restore you should also have another former registry files like:

SAM_PREVIOUS
SOFTWARE_PREVIOUS
SYSTEM_PREVIOUS
DEFAULTS_PREVIOUS
SECURITY_PREVIOUS
BCD-TEMPLATES_PREVIOUS

You can safely remove them if you really want

Flavius, thank you. I will try to delete the file and see if it fixes the problem. What happens if Vista does not let me delete the file?

Saying true it strange you have trouble with removing former registry files which shouldn't be used by system .Try to delete this file in safe mode.
