Which RAID setup should i get?

All right so right now im looking into setting up a RAId for my PC but i dunt know which ike RAID 0 or RAID 5. the reason for this raid will be for faster rendering and loading. i work with HD video all the time so 2 or 3 hard drvies would be useful. i know RAID 0 helps but does it help with rendering or anything like that at all? and the failure rate is kinda high so i dunno. my main question is what does RAID 5 do i know it help speed like 0 and increases stability but i heard it can also increase storage. is this true? wjat would be the best for editing purposes. i have a single 7200 RPM Hitatchi 500 GB. (my motherboard supports both )

With Raid 0, which I use, you achieve greater disk access speed as information is written across the drives. If I lose one drive, however, I lose everything. That's why I back up all data on a server.

Raid 5 will spread your data across multiple disks. If one disk fails, you can rebuild that disk by putting in a new one. So - better data protection and fast data recovery.

If you want the speed, go with 0.

If you want the security of data recovery, go with 5.

** EDIT ** Yes, you do give up disk space using 5.

If you want speed and peace of mind for backup why not go with a RAID 1+0 array or commonly known as RAID 10, This gives the speed of RAID 0 with the data redundancy of 1 (best to do this with 4 identical drives for the speed aspect)

You're right that Raid 1+0 does offer speed and reliability. One thing I should have mentioned for 5, and goes for 10, is that read is fast, similar to 0. It's the write that is slower. Having a mirrored drive has to write the data twice. So 1 is mirroring, 0 is striping and hence we have 10 or 1+0.

hmm never thought about 10. so ur saying 4 drives would be better then?i think 4 drives might be a little too much. how much is the speed difference from a single to RAID 5? is it about the same as RAID 0 or half or wut?

Supposedly you could use two, but that would be a waste. Use four or more for maximum speed.

Remember, you should choose identical hard drives, and for RAID 10 is enough but the array must be an even number. You also have to put in a driver of a disk if you install Vista onto it.

I do not know the specifics, other than they are similar when it comes to reading. Raid 5 takes a slight hit when it comes to writing.

Could i just get 2 hard drives and put them in RAID 0 while leaving the main C unchanged? then if i wanted to later i could reinstall vista and change whcih one i want to install vista on? nad use the un-raided one for storage?

Yes, if you have a Vista licence. Just don't install to the wrong drive.

k so right now i have a 500 gig im gettign 2 1 TB's and once i RAID em i can install vIsta to the RAIDED 1TB's right? if so i love you (i know i ask so many questions but i just NEED to be sure)

Yes, but you need a sata driver. Do you have your mobo disc? Also, I would really recommend two 1.5TB Seagate hard drives for RAID 0. I'm using the same ones by early november in a gaming super tower (Thermaltake Armor+). 32MB cache, 8.5ms access time, 7200RPM aka really good. Make sure you have 2 free sata connectors and 2 psu connectors.

True, but i didn't want to recommend that. recommended to have two controllers if you go that route. to me it's basically like mirroring two network drives. as mentioned earlier, you will not realize any real speed gain with two striped/mirrored drives.

Most motherboards have 2 controllers. The Gigabyte P55 UD4P has 3 controllers - 2 sata on the gigabyte, 6 sata on the P55, and 2 esata external for the jmicron. Most motherboards have 2 or more.

yeah i got my mobo disk. i have a Corsair 750 Watt psu so i think it does. i have 3 or 4 open SATA ports so im good with that. just to make sure is my PSU ok?

If you raid hard drives, then the controller is taken. So you need 2 controllers. Corsair is one of the best psu's. You'll have no problem.

RAID on a data drive won't do much for your speed - but it can mirror your data to prevent data loss (I use a Netgear DNS-323 NAS device with RAID 1 for this specific purpose).

RAID on an OS drive will make things speedy - but beware changes to the system that'll mess things up. I've got RAID 5 in my Win7 system (using Vista drivers) and it's pretty fast (6.2 WEI) - but it was at 7.4 when I was using Vista.

Since the RAID controller didn't have any Win7 drivers, I upgraded to another controller - and still only have a 6.2 WEI rating. During the upgrade the RAID array got borked - and I had to reset everything (and lose the data) in order to get it working again (I did have a backup tho' - so it wasn't very painful).
