Something is eating up my C drive

I've just got a new notebook and installed bitcomet to download some files.
I don't know if it's got anything to do with the program but somehow once in a while when i click into my computer, i found out that every time i check it there's 1GB less space in my drive.
i thought it was bitcomet's problem so i deleted it to see if my guess was right but then after deleting i lost another 1 GB to whatever is doing this.
Presumably there shouldnt be any virus since i've only been using this computer for a few days and i performed a few scans already.
What could possibly be causing this?

Hi and welcome. Anytime you download a file from a torrent you risk your computer. I dont think its bit torrent that is using you dis space but if you have downloaded even 1 torrent you could be infected. Do you have an anti virus running and current?

Now on to the HD space. do you have it to setup do a backup? if yes then the space is going to that. If not it could be indexes, and others.

One way to find out is by downloading a 3rd party app called treezise Pro. The trial is free and it will tell you what is using the space..

Hello Franzt, and welcome to Vista Forums.

In addition, double check to see how much disk space is being used by System Restore for restore points and shadow copy. You can adjust the maximum size if it is to large. You would want to have at least 5GB to be able to keep a few restore points stored though.

i'll try what you mentioned but is is possible that windows is updating itself without my knowing?
because i'm seeing this update icon on the shut down icon and i thought maybe it's installing updates and so it's taking up a lot of space

It depends on how you have it set up. Most ppl set it to advise but dont install to be cautious. There was a monster update yesterday but not before it

Yep, and Vista will create a restore point before installing Windows Updates as well.

Long time ago, I made this write-up because the question keeps coming up from people that just got a new Vista system. Maybe it helps you understnd the phenomenon:

With each install and uninstall, Vista writes a shadow (restore point) of about 1GB - plus one is written each day. For that purpose Vista reserves 15% of your OS disk partition and allocates/uses it as needed.
Find Command Prompt (in All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt), right click on it and Open as Administrator. Into the little black window type VSSADMIN LIST SHADOWSTORAGE and hit ENTER. It will show 3 numbers:
Allocated - that is the amount that it has grabbed from your OS partition at this time
Used - this is the amount currently used
Maximum - this is the ultimate amount it will allocate and use
Once you reach "maximum", it will reuse the space deleting the oldest shadows for the storage of the newest shadows. With e.g. an appr. 200Gb of OS partition you should expect a maximum of 30GBs that are reserved for the system and that you cannot use. If your OS partition is larger or smaller, the shadowstorage will be accordingly (always 15% max.) But the restore points (shadows) are required the day you need to do a system restore

Doh good to know I've always made manual restore points.I always do when i make serious changes.I'd rather have a point of my own even though they do a pretty good job of making restore points.

blue, any time something gets installed OR uninstalled, you get an automatic restore point.

Double check your location for bittorent files and run a SAS and Malwarebytes scan. Clean up your restore points using disk cleanup and also glary utilities.
