Internet explorer. I have never used any other browser

Also if I try and delete it states in use with another program..

reboot in safe mode and try to delete it there. you might want to right click the file and get its properties just to make sure what it is.

Touch wood, but I emptied my "virus Vault" on AVG anti Virius and it disappeared. Hopefully that will have sorted it.
Thank you for trying to help and I'll be back on if it returns!

This is happening again, and I can't stop it!

If its the AVG you can simply get a different AV program. I recommend eset samrt security 4.x AV and firewall.

Thanks, but I don't think its AVG as the file is continuing to grow, (17GB in 2 hours), and I have turned AVG off. The virus vault is empty in it.

Could it be due to tracking cookies? And if so where will they be stored on my PC?

its not cookies. they are small (~1k files) for them to be 17 gigs there would have to be 17 million sites you visited in 2 hours.

there is a 3rd party app called treesize that has a free trail. tree size will let you look inside the file and will let you delete it.

Where do I find Treesize and how do I use it?

It seems that I can delete the files once I have turned off my PC and started again, but it just starts the same sort of files and quickly starts populating it again. I'm downloading the tree size program to see if it can delete it whilst it is still being populated.

I have tried a system restore several times but it has never worked saying some unspecififed error has stopped it.

I have run CCleanup and it has found nothing, as does the AVG virus scans.

why dont you go to msconfig and see what is set to launch at startup. you can selectively turn off things till you find what is causing this then turn the others back on

its not you its me. to go to msconfig you go to start>search>msconfigit has 5 tabs that allow you to adjust what starts with windows, and be a porcess of elimination you can determine what app is doing this. I would sugest "hiding the ms services" cause you wnat them to run and selectively un checking others.

it should look something like this

Cheers Ken

I'll give this a go tomorrow. I have stopped it using task manager and I think it was something called a persistance module or msDNA responder or KMCD.exe but I'll check again tomorrow - its getting late here

Thanks for your help and I'll be back in touch to let you kmow how I get on.
