Full CPU speed

I have a Dell D500 with the Intel Pentium M @ 1.3 GHz. Lately my pc has been acting slow and I ran CPU-Z to check the clock and it said that it is running at 598.6 MHz. I was wondering why? I when into the BIOS and it is set at 1.3 Ghz as the CPU speed, but the SpeedStep is turned on. Is speedstep causing this to happen? If so, other than turning it off in the BIOS, which it wont let me allow, is there any way of overriding this. Right now it has Windows XP Home SP3 installed with 768 DDR RAM. I am using the "Always on" config in the power options btw.

I tried to update the BIOS but it wont let me since my battery is dead and wont says its not connected for some reason. Even if conncected to the AC outlet doesnt seem to matter.

ok..... well it appears ''Speedstep'' is enabled, this is an energy saving function which lowers your multi while idle..

though when the machine is stressed the multi comes back up restoring its stock speed, so i don't think disabling it will net you any better performance.... but you can try.


you will need to enter the system BIOS upon starup.... once in look for either the ''Advanced options'' or ''CPU values'', you will find two options in there somewhere called.... ''C1E'' & ''EIST'' disable both of these & reboot, your clocks should now run @ full speed 24/7 :)

EDIT: i see you cant get in there to turn them off, im sorry but there's no way to override them vis S/W, it needs to be done in the BIOS.

I was able to use RightMark to manually set the power scheme to have it always at full Multiplier and Voltage. It runs at 1.2896 GHz now. Thanks for the help.

well... i stand corrected :p


i weren't aware of any S/W that could alter those functions..... i knew FSB adjustment was possible, but not other BIOS functions.

this app will come in very handy for ppl that are locked out of the BIOS for whatever reason...

It only lets you go to the max supported for the respective cpu. For instance this Pentium M @1.3GHz. I dont think it will allow you to overclock but its better to run at max CPU then not at all.
