Vista miscalculating 5gigs(ish) on every harddrive

Hi guys, I've got a curious one for you.

On every harddrive (and every partition) I have a situation like this.

160gig hard drive formatted NTFS of course is actually only 149 gb. That's not the issue.



The issue is

Total HDD space is 149GB

Used HDD Space is 143GB
Free HDD space is 5.97GB
----------------------------------
148.97GB Total, call it 149.



So.....everything seems to add up right?

NO.

When I go into my drive, highlight everything and pull the statistics, the read like this
Used Space 136 GB (146,984,673,045 bytes)

136 is NOT 143..........

EVERY hard drive is like this on my system....somewhere between 5-7 gigs "missing".

Any ideas?

    DSL 3.0mbps down 768kbps up.

    My first build! December 2006. In total over the course of two years it's run me about 1600 bucks. The initial 1300 when building, and then some upgrades.

Your page file might using that space...

Open explorer, click on tool, folder options, view, click show hidden files radio button and uncheck hide protected operating system files. and give ok.

Then you will find pagefile.sys is present on every drive and the size will be equal to the missing size...

You hit it right on the head. That's what was causing it.

It was driving me NUTS! lmao.

My system carries 4 gigs of ram, and when I looked into the pagefile statistics, it listed my total pagefile across all drives as almost 23gigs............*cough*.
A quick little bit of fiddling and I'm all set now.

Also note that a 160GB drive will not be 160GB when formatted.
You have the MBR and also file index(not the same as vista).

Yeah, I did know that.

The 160 gig drives work out to be something like 149 gigs.
At least that's how mine was.



For some reason Vista had my pagefiles set to 6 gigs PER DRIVE........huh?
I changed that :). No reason to pagefile 6 gigs on a 149 gig storage drive with just some video and documents on it that I barely go into.
But it did it to my system partition(good), it did it to my XP partition!(Bad), did it to my workfile partition(meh), my storage drive,and both my 1 tb backup/storage drives......

sigh.


Oh by the way Delphin, your avatar rocks. I was staring at it for a solid 4 mins........

Delphin turns from a right-handed slapper, to a left-handed slapper. Guess that's just what happens when you go thru a mirror, huh?

It is mesmerizing.
