I REALLY WANT TO PLAY "Dust: A tale of the Wired West" ON VISTA BUT I CAN'T!!!

So yeah I have this old 1995 Cyberflix game called "Dust: A tale of the Wired West" and it's like my favorite game of all time! :D On Vista it'll install just fine (most of the time) but it won't play!

I tried doing all sorts of things with the Compatibility tab of the properties, but nothing works. All it does is like start up, but never load. It just freezes.

And occasionally, ONLY OCCASIONALLY, it'll start up completely and everything works fine, but the mouse will only move around in the upper left quarter of the screen. And where ever I click, it thinks I'm clicking somewhere else. :huh:

Please, I desperately need your help in playing this game! I love this game! Please help me!

Others suggest ScummVM (do a google search for it)


Some of the old games need DOS, others Directx 9 installed

This may be nothing since you said, from time to time you are able to play it. All I can suggest is to update your Video, Audio & Monitor drivers if they are not up to date.

Yeah I was able to play it from time to time, but not very far :huh:

This game isn't a DOS game and plus I tried DOSBox already

The ScummVM thing didn't recognize it or something.

I'll try downloading Directx 9

I created an account especially to answer this question. :D

All you have to do is to install a program called: "Virtual PC" which you can download from the windows support website. I'm running Dust on a Vista 64bit!

After downloading it, you can create a virtual drive and install any OS you want. The game works fine on Windows XP if you have the latest DirectX.

I hope this will help and bro you must have a great taste of games of you're still into Dust in 2009!

Hey Jeremy, I've noticed your posts all around the web, so I thought I'd give you a REAL fix.
After you install the game, ignore the game directory. Go into your computer folder and right click on the cd drive with the Dust CD/ISO. Select EXPLORE. In the drive right click on DUST application. Select PROPERTIES. In Compatibility choose RUN AS ADMIN, RUN in 256 COLORS and also check the resolution setting in order to see all dialog options.

Now double click on the DUST app in the cd/iso to run the game. IMPORTANT: DO NOT close the CD/ISO folder in windows explorer...this will cause a DF error.

Hope it works for you, buddy. I'm having a blast with these whores upstairs.

I have a slightly different problem. I got Dust to run - I set the compatibility mode for the df.exe file. It started and ran just fine, but then I decided to save the game. Bad things happened. Basically, an Explorer window to the game directory opened. However, there was no way to select a directory or anything. And the game itself exited, so I couldn't return. This is repeatable. I suspect that the game tries to create a "save" directory, and can't do it under Vista. It might work if the directory already existed, but I don't know what to name it. Any suggestions?

I need help too. I don't own the disk, instead I downloaded the game by a torrent so all the files are already compressed. After I burned it onto a disk and tried to download it I couldn't. It kept coming up with errors and telling me there was no association for the game. I'm completely lost, help please!

Okay, I finally figured it out for my laptop how to play this game and I hope it works for you too. I downloaded this game as a torrent so its an ISO file for me. What I did was unzip all the files and mounted the Dust.exe to a virtual drive. Then before installing the game, I went to the application and right clicked and went to Properties. I then went to the compatibility tab and checked off Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows 98/Windows ME and then checked Run this program as an administrator. I then started the game and installed it. Then I played it. And error came up at first, but the I exited out of it and clicked play and it works fine. The mouse isn't funky or anything. The only bad part is is that you can't save it, so I just keep the application running and then play from where I left off. Hope this helps!

Hello, I too have had some problems playing this on x64bit vista. none of the solutions provided here worked for me. I'm a big windows fan so im not suggesting jumping ship but for certain programs that do not work on vista I have installed ubuntu (linux), with about 15 GB of hard drive space, running wine which I can now play dust with out any issues. The only message I get is a resolution message. Because this is a vista forum i will not mention (cause i'm sure you can google the answers) how to set this up. Again this is last resort. I have both vista ultimate/windows 7 and a whole bunch of other OS's running on multiple computers. Hope this helps anyone. And wow we're really spoiled with the graphics quality of games today.
