Computer keeps restarting. No clue what the problem could be.

First off, let me just say I'm pretty much a total dunce when it comes to computers.
So, anyway I just got a new hard drive because my old one died and it seems I already have problems. I had similar problems with the old one (kept restarting itself) until eventually it got to the point I couldn't start or even repair/reinstall Windows because there were no drivers. However this time I don't get the BSOD when it happens, at least visibly (in the error report it tells me the Problem Event Name is BlueScreen).

This is the second or third time (one of the times could have been because of a power outage) it's happened since I got my new hard drive on the 16th. The screen turns black for a few seconds and then it restarts. With my last hard drive it would give the BSOD after the black screen, but not with this one.

I just don't know what to do, I thought my problem was with my hard drive the last time which is why I bought a new one and it seems to have helped, but now I'm thinking there might have been problems elsewhere too.

Like I said, I don't really know much about computers, so I'm not sure as to what other kind of information you guys might need to tell what the problem could be. So if I need to post anything else to be more specific tell me and I'll see if I can.

So you have installed a new hard drive and your system still reboots. How often does this occur? If it occurs daily, bring your computer up in safe mode and see if it reboots. If it does, it MAY be a hardware problem. If not, it could be a driver problem. Would you send us a minidump (c:\windows\minidump, zip the dump file (*.dmp)) and upload it to us?

It's happened 3 times since I installed it, so I guess 3 times a week, but I don't think I can rely on that to be entirely accurate.

When I try to add the Minidump files to an archive it tells me "Access is denied." My account is the Administrator (and the only account on here), so I don't know why access is denied. Is there any way for me to get around this?

And now that I think about it I ran into this "Access is denied" problem the other day when I ran the chkdisk sfc\scannow to try and figure out the problem. When I ran it, it told me there were some (I think it was 2) errors that couldn't be fixed with the scan and when I tried to check the log file report it gave me the same "Access is denied" message. So I just ran a System Repair, but that told me that there were no problems to repair.

You might be able to access the file in safe mode.

Starting it in Safe Mode allowed me to zip the dump files.

they dont point to anything specific , the faulting module is differant each time , one is firefox one is antivir (sched.exe) (im assuming you using Avira? )

you do seem to have some very outdated drivers on that system , i assume you reformatted when you got your new hard drive did you update to the latest drivers for everything? Including motherboard? There seems to be a lot of crashes that point to service pack 2 and outdated mobo drivers

Ill have a closer look at the dumps in the meantime get on to updating ALL your drivers to the latest versions

is there anything specific your doing when it crashes? (on the internet/opening files?)

Yeah I use Avira. And usually I'm just browsing the internet when it happens.

Like I said I have really limited knowledge on this kind of stuff. I asked on another forum what I needed to do when installing a new hard drive and they said I just need to install Windows and I'll be good to go, but nothing about new drivers or any of that. Or I could have maybe misunderstood them somehow, I'm not really sure. But anyway, no I didn't do any of that, but I guess I should have.
But, just how do I go about updating my drivers and all that? I assume I download them from Microsoft's website, but I don't know which ones I download or how I even install them. I don't want to do the wrong thing and mess it up more.

you need to install the latest drivers for your hardware , Vista will have installed its generic ones but they could be giving you issues

click downloads and download and install all the drivers there (chipset/audio/modem/video/media reader IGNORE BIOS)

now unfortunately these drivers are out of date too but they will do do for now to see if it solves any issues if not i will take a closer look at your spec and point you to the downloads for the latest drivers (im a bit pushed for time at the mo so we'll start with the ones on that site )

I downloaded and installed all of them except the BIOs. I haven't noticed anything different yet aside from a few icons being different. So I guess now all I can do is just wait and see if the performance is any better.

Looks like that might have done the trick, it's been 4 days and so far I haven't encountered any problems. Now I just have to hope it stays that way.

I really thought that fixed it too, but I guess I was just being too optimistic.

From what I can tell Windows Recovery Tools is just a different name for Windows Startup Repair which I've already run and it didn't help, it said there were no problems. Of course I am rather uneducated when it comes to computer terminology and stuff like that so if I'm wrong can you tell me how to find it?

Computer still restarts on me, now it even has the BSOD.

I made a topic about a week ago about the problem and you guys helped me a lot with it. So I think I should say thanks once again. But it seems the problem was not fixed like I thought it was.

Now I don't want to clutter the board by making a bunch of topics, so I was a little hesitant to make this one since I'd already made another one. But it's been a few days since I made a post in my last topic, so I thought that I better just make a new one. I'm sure you guys are really busy and don't have the time to bother checking back in all the topics already marked solved, which is completely understandable.

I guess I should start at the beginning of the problem again. I recently got a new hard drive (September 16th) because my old one had died (which I assumed was the only problem) after having loads of problems with crashing and BSOD. However a few days after installing the new one (on the 20th) I encountered the problem again except the screen would just freeze up, turn black, and then it would restart. It did not give me the BSOD appear, like my last hard drive did when I had this problem.

When it does happen it seems to usually happen the most when I'm browsing the internet, but I've also had it happen while I was messing around in Photoshop or just listening to music.

Then I made my previous topic here and you guys said that the problem could be the drivers because mine were ancient, so I updated them and they do seem to have helped reduce the extent of the problem a bit. I encountered no problems worth mentioning for enough of an amount of time that I was convinced that fixed the problem. Of course with my luck not long after I posted the problem seemed to be fixed I was proven wrong when it happened again, but this time I was also greeted with the lovely BSOD along with it.

I believe archie123 said something about the drivers he gave me to update to were still quite a bit old, but should still be of help (which they do seem to have helped a little bit). If I would switch to the newer ones do you think that could possibly fix it? Or maybe the problem runs deeper than just the drivers.

And it happened again. And it also gave me a pop-up saying "igfxsrvc has stopped working" and when I hit "Close Program" it took me right to the BSOD. I'm guessing that's a core application/program and maybe that could be the cause of all this, but I've never encountered it before so who knows. It was also accompanied by a "Windows Search Indexer has stopped working." popup, but I didn't get a chance to do anything with that since it rebooted instantly.

I'm starting to think maybe it wasn't such a good idea to install the new drivers after all. I just seem to be encountering new problems all of a sudden. At least before it just shut down and didn't give BSOD. Sigh, I just really don't know what to do. I'm afraid if I keep going like this my new hard drive will go the way of my old one, which would suck. But my problem is obviously deeper than just the hard drive which makes me wonder if there's any way to save it at all.

video chipset driver re-install

Here's a dumb question. By reinstall the video chipset driver, does that mean the chipset driver, the video driver, or both?
I just reinstalled the video driver, but I'd rather be sure I did the right one instead of ignoring it.
