Microsoft and consumers - taking action against global software piracy
Today, Microsoft announced a surge of over 150,000 voluntary reports in the past two years from people who unknowingly purchased counterfeit software that often included viruses or other malware. More than double the amount of previous records, this increase reflects growing concern for the harm caused by counterfeit software and Microsoft’s efforts to give people a voice in the fight against software counterfeiting. In addition, Microsoft highlights Consumer Action Day, a simultaneous launch of education initiatives and enforcement actions in more than 70 countries to help protect consumers and increase awareness of the risks of counterfeit software. Using KMS in Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 deployments
Today, Kim Griffiths shares: One of the more common questions that we are hearing about volume activation today is around how to update your existing Key Management Service (KMS) to support Windows 7 and/or Windows Server 2008 R2. This is also causing some customers issues as they attempt to use the new keys that are available on the Volume License Service Center and get a 0xC004f050 or 0xC004F015 errors, as shown here:                          Why is this happening, and how can it be resolved? With each release of Windows, Microsoft will issue new product keys. This is true for volume license customers as well. In order for this key to be recognized on an earlier release of Windows, it is necessary to update the...
Windows BitLocker Claims
Windows 7 is seeing success in the marketplace which I am very happy about from a security perspective. The Microsoft Security Intelligence Report has shown us again and again that the more up-to-date a PC is, the less likely it is to be infected by malware and other potentially dangerous software. So Windows 7 making strides is helpful to the ecosystem overall from a security standpoint. Success comes at a price though, through greater scrutiny and misinterpretation of some of the technologies. One of those technologies is BitLocker. I've seen numerous claims the past few weeks about weaknesses in BitLocker and even claims of commercial software that "breaks" BitLocker. One claim is from a product that "allows bypassing BitLocker...

Saks Fifth Avenue Holidays “Windows” and Holiday Themes for Windows 7
A couple of weeks ago, I blogged about how we were partnering with Saks Fifth Avenue on decorating their windows along both 5th Ave and 50th Street in NYC to help celebrate the holidays. You can check out the unveiling which took place in New York City on November 23rd here.   During the unveiling, Kristen Chenoweth and the chorus of PS22 performed live to help spread the holiday cheer as the windows went “live.” If you’re in New York and are doing some shopping, you should definitely stop by Saks and check out the “Twinkle Twinkle Little Flake” windows. There are 20 HD monitors (a combination of 52”, 42”, 36” and 32” displays) in the holiday windows on 5th Avenue running custom animations all powered by Windows 7 PCs. I’m told...
