Another update stuck thread (sorry!) all tips not working on this on this laptop....

Hi all - first my apologies for another update thread, but am at my wits end. I have spent 2 days reading the threads here and on Microsoft regarding the Vista update issues and doing as much troubleshooting as possible with no luck. I previously fixed a Vista laptop with this issue but this one is proving much more stubborn.

Working with Vista Home Premium 64 bit on a freshly restored dv4-1435dx (received it with SP1 and applicable updates). All was working fine at that point as far as updating. I ended up with a manual update of SP2 as it would not auto update that. While it completed fine, and says SP2 in my system info -- strangely, my update list shows that failed 5 times, but no entry for successful. Not sure if this is a problem or not. If I go to install SP2 again it says already installed.

Then got the dreaded checking for update issue that wouldn't stop. After researching -- I tried every single suggestion, updating each item with the standalone updater or link one by one, turning off AU, turning off AV, restarting each time, adding again and they ALL have installed without any problem. (Have IE7 installed so leaving the IE9 one out.) Just finished installing the system update readiness tool and that is where I am now.

Because there are so many suggestions and I keep finding new links, installers, updates, and they change over time, I'm afraid I may have put some older ones or not gone in the correct order. I can install anything manually but still no luck when I try to do automatic updates - left it for 15 hours and nothing.

Also, I did the scannow test, and it found some errors that said "could not be fixed" or something like that - I have the log file from that but not sure how to correct this or if that is necessary

Any help would be much appreciated. I have old legacy hardware for work that must use XP or Vista and I have to keep up with this for that reason on a few units

You're saying when you go to Windows Update, it just sits there for hours doing nothing right?

If yes, then I briefly looked and I don't see on all your screenshots that you installed KB3198234?

If you did not? ..then to get the latest WIN32K.SYS update then manually install that one which has been known to fix that issue for Vista in many cases depending.

You can get KB3198234 at this link below, and choose your Vista x64 version on the bottom, to download and manually install it:

Yup that's correct. Hmm, I'm not sure how I missed that one but will try it - if you try to install something that's already installed, assume it will just cancel itself out?

AHHHHHHHHHHH - just as I was typing this, I restarted after the update readiness tool install and IT FOUND 190 UPDATES!

Holy %*#( lol. I'm letting it do it's thing and not touching it. So, assuming all this works ok, and I still don't have the KB3198234 after all that should I still install that?

You already installed KB3198234 just now, and so it should show up on your installed list.

Windows Update and what you let it install on these older OS's is a loooong and varied subject, and individual.
I do not install every thing given, and I choose what to install very carefully, ymmv, but I also always create backup partition images before proceeding to have a 'for sure' and easy way back. I would not do all the work you are doing installing all these updates, without along the way creating a way back to a working point, so that just in case of problems, you don't have to start from the beginning again, just to go forward. ymmv

I went through the same thing on Windows 7 a few months back that had needed a Different KB to solve that same WU problem, and during that time is when I took notice what the best fix for Vista was too, and downloaded it myself.

I didn't manually install KB3198234 yet - it started on it's own before I could do that....

I agree it's a mess, and if I didn't have this hardware that we really need XP/Vista to use I'd stick with my 7 and 10 units completely. It's becoming more trouble than it's worth, and as meticulous as I normally am I got to the point where I was just installing any and everything anyone suggested in the hopes something would stick lol!

Have a number of 7 units and none have had these issues - can't even think about having to deal with it on all of those! I went through every single hack and trick known to make my 10 look like 7 - needless to say I really, really don't want to upgrade lol

It's at 78 installed out of 190 now yay

I had meant to say right click and save target on the link that popped up when you went there to get it, but no problem, you have it installed and that's the main point.

I like to have and need all the OS's installed for software testing.

Anyway, if you have the slow WU happen to Win7, then you will need KB3172605 ..is the better alternative, ymmv

CRAP! Entire day updating then it seems to get stuck and restart - installing upon boot, all looked ok, now this:

"Updates were not configured correctly. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer."

NOO! Googling brings up lots of suggestions to restore or reinstall....do I really have to do this?

Ok, hours and hours later it restarted and I see that about 20 updates were succesful and the rest failed!

Went back and tried to install KB3198234 (and the one that a thread said replaced it in Dec I think) but BOTH said "does not apply to your system" - couldn't find either of those numbers in my install list though....

Just put it back to checking and will leave it overnight....don't know if I just made it worse with those random ones installing or not

Interestingly though, the 5 ones I managed to get on successfully when the updates started working again and found the 190 -- those are all still there; theoretically it should allow this to restart again but no idea if something else got messed up with the interruption

Will update when I get up and see if anything changed.

I can tell you that KB3198234 did Not cause any of your problems.
You asked for a way to fix the slow update problems, and I gave you the install to update to the latest WIN32K.SYS that would, and did, solve that issue at the point you were at. I also strongly hinted with other seasoned advices what I would do, and not do while you were installing Vista from scratch like that - I would not attempt it any other way.
Windows Update is Not Perfect with how it updates these older OS's, not even Windows 7; heck for that matter it's not perfect with any of them.

It's impossible for me to know what you have done and what went wrong at this point, in order to steer you perfectly forward.
You have your specific reasons for using Vista, and that's fine, but realize it's also so very outdated in so many ways to meet todays online world I can't begin to describe. Yes I do have Vista fully installed and selectfully updated and working well, but rarely need to boot it anymore unless for specific software testing. I always loved Vista btw which actually was the beginnings of all great OS's after it.

If you decide to fresh install, certainly start with the latest Vista SP2 iso you can get to avoid any and all unnecessary updating, and as mentioned of course it's extremely wise to do a partition backup of the OS's building timeline along the way after each series of updates. (if you had done that previously, you could easily restore back to any point you had)

Ahh I apologize, I probably wasn't clear enough. I never actually got to install KB3198234. While I was typing the reply to you suggesting that, the laptop started updating 190 items So I never got there. Then, the whole laptop froze (light white screen, cursor round and turning) and restarted, cutting the update process off in the middle.

I am thinking that cutting off caused the "not configured correctly" but of course can't be sure. When the laptop restarted, I did go and try to manually install KB3198234 as I hadn't gotten to it yet and that's when it said "does not apply to your system." So, it's still not on and I can't get it on. But you're right, it didn't cause the error, since it wasn't actually installed

Anyway, just got up and the laptop had restarted, and the remaining 136 updates were ready to install. Hopefully they will go through okay...and it was just the freezing that caused the blip. I will update in a bit...

Most likely I will get the Vista units all up to date and then in April will keep them offline as much as possible after that. I don't need to go on much, as the hardware that needs Vista doesn't require it - but I do need access from time to time to download some items in a pinch when there's no time to do it from another location. So it won't be permanently online, thankfully!

Okay I see now. When I read you saying:

I thought that meant you had clicked and let it install online and it started... okay then no problem, and for gp me just going to that MS Catalog link and clicking the non-download link, and then clicking through the boxes and tabs for more information, I see it now shows that the KB I gave was updated and replaced since then, I've not verified further, and I did not keep up with the 'reality of it' since the last I checked back in late Nov.

Anyway it should of not given you that error if you downloaded the right one of the 6 OS choices given which for you you said yours is x64. Perhaps your WU automatically gave you the replacement it shows now, although it's been said it's only a temporary win32k.sys fix, just like the one I gave you. As usual, you have to constantly closely pay attention to the latest known word on the street with this whole process! It's endless and always constantly evolving...

Just confirm first that you have Vista SP2 installed. click the Start button, choose Run..., and enter the command "winver" (without the quotes) . If you have the latest service pack the pop-up should show that Service Pack 2 is installed.



Most Vista SP2 users are currently having difficulties running Windows Update, and affected users experience "Checking for updates..." hangs and slow Windows Updates that can run for several hours (or even days) without throwing an error message. ScousaJAY's thread windows update just seems to hang while checking is the most active thread in this board and many Vista SP2 users post regular feedback there.

Please see the step-by-step instructions on page 1 of m#l's thread Updates not working, it has been searching for updates for hours in the MS Answers forum for a possible workaround if SP2 is installed. STEP # 2 of that post is updated after every Patch Tuesday (the second Tuesday of each month) with the latest list of Windows kernel-mode driver (Win32K.sys) and graphics component updates that must be pre-installed to speed up Windows Update.

Yes I actually spent a while on those and I believe 2 other very long threads previously, they were both helpful and confusing as there were so many links, versions, updates, replacements and tips. But hopefully if I get myself set now I can use those for reference going forward, at least until April and then whatever happens beyond...

Update: All of the final 136 updates installed sucessfully! Restarted, and 2 more came up - one important (KB2522422) which installed fine, but the second one without a number "Windows Internet Explorer 9 for Windows Vista for x64 based systems" failed with error 9C48. Restarted and tried again, and failed.

Googling 9C48 mentions some corrupt files/updates for IE9...but not exactly sure what to try now.

The version of IE on now is 9.0.8112.16421...so it seems there's an issue where it's already on, but the update thinks it's not? I see the entry where it successfully installed yesterday.

Open IE9 and go to Help | About Internet Explorer - if your IE9 browser is fully patched you should have the latest Update Version 9.0.57 (KB3203621). If you have an older version, post back and I'll provide a link for the standalone .msu installer.

I'm not clear from the image you posted, but is the only update that is failing with an error 9C48 an Optional update? When you click the Review optional updates link, what KB number or hardware driver is Windows Update trying to install? Does Help | About Internet Explore show that IE9 is patched to Update Version 9.0.57 (KB3203621) since you re-booted? If IE9 still won't update please post a screenshot of the pop-up window you see when you go to Help | About Internet Explorer, and let me know the URL for the download link you used when you downloaded the 64-bit standalone .msu installer for KB3203621 that threw the "not applicable" warning.

If your Vista SP2 OS is now fully patched with all Important and Recommended updates as of the January 2017 Patch Tuesday updates then security update KB3216775 (MS17-004: Description of the security update for Local Security Authority Subsystem Service: January 10, 2017) should be installed on your system. Search your installed updates at Control Panel | Programs and Features | View Installed Updates and see if KB3216775 is installed. When searching, enter the full KB number in the search box (e.g., "KB3216775" and not a partial string like "3216775").

Yes, everything else is updated and nothing else shows - it searched fully and only this one optional update is there.

Reviewing that update, it has a description but no number, just says size 35.5mb and published 5/31/2011

IE9 patch is still KB982861 after reboot

Yes I found KB3216775 successfully installed in the list from 2/9
