A few problems after SURT (tried to install SP2)

Hi,

I have tried to install SP2 on my Vista Home Premium 32 bit (Dutch). After evenings trying to fix some problems with FixIt and Readiness it's going better and better. But SP2 won't install yet. In my checksur.log there are a few problems, after more than 900 were repaired. Can someone help me to fix these problems so I can try to install SPV again?

Hello BasW and welcome to the forums

Yay, I've finally got a nice SURT log to play with :) Because you only have manifest files corrupted (not their matching .mum and .cat files), we can't trace them through an update. We're going to have to manually trace them through the registry. Please bear with me whilst I prepare instructions!

Hello BasW,

I would like you to zip up the following file and attach it to your next post please:

C:\Windows\system32\config\COMPONENTS (It has no file extension)

This file is a registry hive that contains all of the information about Windows Updates; by uploading it for me, I'll be able to trace the manifests quickly and without risk of (further) corrupting your system if something goes wrong :)

Hi Tom,

Thank you for your help. I have attached a zip file with COMPONENTS in it. You mentioned the lack of update information, that was the point I gave up and ask for help.

Hi BasW,

No problem :) It's nice to finally get some practise with a more advanced CheckSUR log. I've only read about them until now -don't be alarmed though, I'm under the guidance of a very knowledgeable person.

You don't have a particularly easy log to fix yourself, so I don't blame you for asking for help!

Please ignore this, I'm posting it because it's taken me a while to trace them all and I don't want to risk losing them:

Hello BasW,

I've sourced a clean copy of one of the troublesome manifest files.

Download the file from my Dropbox:

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/16537616/F...5_7.0.6000.381_none_7e2e53603f89ed2f.manifest

Then Copy and Paste it into the following folder:

C:\Windows\winsxs\Manifests

After you've done this, reboot your computer. Then run the SURT and copy and paste the contents of the CheckSUR.persist.log file, as you did before :)

Hi Tom,

How can I copy the file into this directory? It seems I have no rights for it to do that? I can try to take the ownership but I'm not sure that it's the right way...

OK, I had taken the ownership and place your file into the directory. SURT is running... for a long time I think. I'll be back when SURT is done :)

Hi Bas,

Sorry about the confusion, I accidentally posted the wrong directory. Well, it's not wrong as such, but it's just more hassle to get the file in there. It's great that you managed to sort it out for yourself. That's great news! One down, four to go - and the one we just did was the hardest of the five.

Again, I'm just posting this as a backup. I'll find the files for you now :)

Let's give another one a go :) I've got the correct folder this time:

%Windir%\Temp\CheckSur\Winsxs\Manifests

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/16537616/F...6.0.6000.21184_none_62f32a60ca5387bd.manifest

Download the file, put it in the folder then run the SURT :) The SURT will do the work for you and put it in the correct folder with the right permissions.

Tom

Once again, ignore this.

The SURT is running again :)

I see you found the update articles. May I ask how do you do that? I've tried that last week to see if uninstalling the articles brings a solution, but I couldn't match them.

I like to know how you got from the filename to the update name. What I see in the contents of the manifest files, there is no link to a update name. Also google gives nothing helpful back with (parts of) the manifest filename.

I've written a tutorial for you :)

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/2...ually-trace-through-registry.html#post1373835

The last manifest has completely stumped me. I'm currently downloading every available Microsoft Update so hopefully it will be in one of those! It's about 10GB of files, so please bear with me whilst that downloads. I'll also ask someone for help on tracing this last manifest whilst I wait for that to finish.

Thank you for the tutorial! I understand the way you did it but I never find out that by myself. It's nice to learn new things :)

I hope you can find the last manifest.

My Computer

Hi Tom,

Is it possible to remove the package instead of fixing the manifest file? Or is the manifest file also neccesary to remove packages?

Bas

My Computer

Hi Bas,

I don't know if it will work, I've never tried it before, but it's definitely worth a shot.

Remove an update

Just search for KB949249 on that list.

Then run the SURT again please, and attach the log as usual :)

That doesn't work. Windows said it couldn't uninstall the update. Hopefully you can find the correct manifest file, otherwise I think I do a reinstall of Vista (or maybe upgrade to Win7).
