Troubles updating to SP2 & WU generally

Troubles updating to SP2 & WU 80070002

I am running Vista x64 Home Premium on an HP Pavilion Laptop. Every time I use windows update, it throws some sort of error no matter how many times I fix the errors with the many tutorials on this site. But what is most frustrating is trying to update to SP2. It will reboot, do its thing, get to 3 of 3 100% complete and stay there for hours. Then it will reboot and say failed to install, rolling back changes. I can upload the original CBS.log file if you would like, but it is 6.64MB. I have looked through the CBS.log and tried to skim through the bulk to get the errors:

Windows update has Error Code 80070002 before and after rebooting with that. I have also deleted everything in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download and C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore, as windows help suggested. I have also run CheckSUR and after running the logs show no errors found or fixed. I have tried running sfc /scannow but it gives this error:
Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service.

That means you have disabled or corrupted Windows Modules Installer service.

Run Start>>Search>>services.msc and make sure Windows Modules Installer service is set MANUAL,if not then correct it.If you don't have this service read SCENARIO III from this link http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/258701-windows-update-error-80070424-a.html

I didn't have a windows modules installer service running, and that was preventing me from searching for updates. I am now downloading and installing 51 updates. I will report back when finished. I expect some new error once it restarts :(

It may be too late, but dont do it all at once. Download two or three at a time, make sure they are ok, then get the next few.

sorry I forgot to post back here, but everything works just fine now. updated to sp2, automatic updates work, and I just love it when things work the way they should :)
