Thank you for this solution, it is very much appreciated. Now if I could find a way to avoid answering a 'do you want to do ... ' question every time I try to do anything.

Thanks again.

Eustace Mendis.

Forgive the belated thanks for this tip. Too busy with other stuff (on my Macs) to get to this, but I will in the next day or two. Thank you.

Using method 2 described above, I changed the value from 3 to 1 and rebooted - this has had no effect at all - the problem still exists.

^ ditto, i am having the same problem. i am running on vista home premium, but method 2 had no effect. my PC has no trouble connecting to my laptop to access files, but the problem occurs when i try to do it the other way around. i get the error message, incorrect login, when i try to connect. is there an alternative method to fix this problem? thanks in advance.

Hi Duce,

Have you set a password for the useraccount your trying to login with?

Steven

Check if the user name on the vista is different from the one on the other system.

Normal practice is to create the same user name on both the machines. This somehow doesn't work well with vista. so go ahead and create a different username with a different password on the vista, than the other machine.

I have the same problem but the solution did not work for me. My Vista Business is the laptop (client) and the PC is Windows XP. I couldn't use the same named account to connect as because I use no password and I read somewhere that is disallowed. So I created a new user on the PC to connect through.

The weird thing is that I had been mapping a network drive just fine. It worked smoothly for several weeks. Then I physically moved the PC to the next room or did something else on one of the systems that I am not aware of, and now I can't get it to work again.

More gory details in:

windows logon unsuccessful during map network drive : Wireless, Internet, and Networking : Windows Vista : Microsoft Answers Forums

I try so hard to log all my admin actions to avoid problems like this, but didn't write anything down.

I couldn't find this information anywhere else. I need to map to my corporate network shares on Novell servers, and I'm using a laptop with Vista Home Premium. I kept getting that nasty "logon unsuccessful" error. I made sure I selected the login with a different user name option, and used my work credentials, but it kept putting my laptop name in front of my user name. Changing this setting did the trick. Now I can see the shares I need to. Thanks!

I have a vista ultimate sp1 laptop and xp sp3 desktop connected on teh same workgroup and router (linksys wireless router, does dhcp). i am unable to access to printer or shared folders from vista to xp desktop and viceversa. i am unable to even ping each other using computer name or ipaddress. i cant map netwrok drive either. and i dont see them in the network map on vista laptop or xp machine.

i did everything suggested in this forum including:
1. enabling sharing on vista (network and sharing center). enable everything.
2. turn on file and printer sharing on xp
2a. run through network sharing wizard on xp.
3. sharing drives on both
4. create same user on both vista laptop and xp pc
5. they are on teh same workgroup
6. they can both access internet, but i cant access printer or shared folders on xp desktop from vista laptop.
7. turn off firewalls on both laptops
8. i have ESET anti-virus and its not blocking anything.
9. network type on vista is set to private.

the only way i can get them to see each other and share folders is by giving my xp desktop a static ip. but this makes the xp machine lose connection to the internet. i am guessing it loses internet connectivity because the router is setup to do dhcp.

Please help.
Seth
