Hi all, following recent windows update my CD/DVD drive has disappeared from my HP Pavillion dv9605ea laptop. Have been searching the net for solutions, tried em all, no solution so far.

Drive is not shown in Dev Manager.
Have done the whole upper/lower filters thing, no solution.
Drive taken out of my lappie and swapped with identical one on wife's hp lappie, My drive showed up and works fine on her lappie, hers not shown when installed in mine. Swapped em back and hers works fine, mine still not.
Have even tried returning my lappie to factory settings but still no joy.

Any thoughts please? Getting extremely frustrated now.....

Does your BIOS show the CD/DVD drive when booting (if in doubt, tap Esc as soon as the HP splash screen shows up. If it sees your CD/DVD drive it'll give an option to boot from it.

Have you uninstalled the storage controllers, then reboot and let Windows discover them?
Have you tried this first thing in the morning - so that overheating would be minimized?
Can you shine a flashlight into the case where the CD/DVD drive goes and look to see if there's anything interfering with the slot/socket there?

Hey, thanks for responding... I appreciate the help... was contemplating laptopicide!

Have not looked in BIOS, don't really know what I should be looking for there...
Connections all look ok, nothing jammed in there, and it's not an overheating problem because nothing has changed even when it has been booted up after sitting overnight or longer.

What's the uninstalling storage controller suggestion? How do I work through that?

My Computer

Press Windows key and R
Type regedit, and then click OK. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
In the right pane, click UpperFilters.

Note You may also see an UpperFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry.[/B] Click UpperFilters only. If you do not see the UpperFilters registry entry, you still might have to remove the LowerFilters registry entry. To do this, go to step 8.
On the Edit menu, click Delete.
When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
In the right pane, click LowerFilters.
On the Edit menu, click Delete.
When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
Exit Registry Editor.

Note If you do not see the LowerFilters registry entry, this content cannot help you any further.

Always backup your registry before making changes there.
At the top of regedit click on file, export and save it to your desktop

Have you tried taking out the battery and completely removing all power for about 5 minutes then retry.

I have used this .bat file to fix it in the past.
Rename it as a .bat and double click it to run.

Boot the computer.
When the HP splash screen shows up, rapidly tap the "Esc" key
The next screen (the boot menu) will list some things - what are they?

To uninstall the storage controller:
Go to Start and type in "devmgmt.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter
Does the CD/DVD drive category show up there? If so, what does it contain?

Then click on the arrow/+ sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers (or something similar with the word "controller" in it).
Right click on each device and select "Uninstall"
DO NOT allow it to remove the driver if that choice is offered.
Reboot the computer and let it reinstall the devices (check in Device Manager to ensure that they are reinstalled).
