the 9800 series is basically the 8800 series with a few extra fps and a new name , Nvidia seemed to release it just to fill a gap between the 8 series and 2 series , just to make some cash it seems , see if you can get a second hand 8800gt of save for a 260gtx , which is a massive leap from the 8 and 9 series , id never recommend ATI , too many driver problems and too many ingame issues

the 9800GT is the same as the 8800GT. but the 9800GTX is better, and has a decently higher Core Clock than the 8800., then there is the 9800GTX+.. the + version is the newer model, with a smaller Processor Core.. the + version will run with less power draw, put out less heat, and overclock better. I'd recommend getting the 9800GTX+ over the 8800GT. the 9800GTX+ is a much better card, and they can be clocked over 800 Mhz and do great in games.. it will also run Much, Much cooler than the 4850..

Get the 9800GTX+ but make sure it's the + version!

and no, it's very simple. just like anything else. pull old one out, put new one in. and update to most recent drivers, not to mention he already has a Nvidia card in there. it would just be easier, and less problem prone to go with Nvidia.. so get the 9800GTX+ and he'll enjoy it.

oh and the 9800GTX+ is a dual slot cooler, so it wont heat up the components inside like the 4850 will, but it being a HP.. make sure the case has enough room for that card.

It'll be tight but it looks like it should fit,

Newegg.com - HP Pavilion M8430F(KJ376AA) Core 2 Quad Q6600(2.40GHz) 4GB DDR2 750GB NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit - Desktop PCs

Nice of Newegg to carry the exact model of HP and have lots of interior pictures of it. It should just fit under that thing (called the "HP Personal Media Drive" according to the manual), and a bit of cable management (HP should be shot for the poor job in those pictures). BTW anyone wants to check it out here's a link to the service manual,

Both cards are similar in performance really. Though the 4850 will begin to come ahead as you crank the anti-aliasing up.

200 dollars for a mobo and at least 150 or so for another OEM copy of vista is a lot of money to spend on a 150 dollar video card upgrade. If you have that much money to spend you should buy a better card.

Just out of curiosity, why are you looking at a mobo upgrade? I got the impression from your earlier post that a dual slot card like the GTX+ would fit, and that you were just going to upgrade the PSU.

I can tell you for a fact that the 9800GTX+ will fit in that case but you will need to use Left hand angle SATA connections on the motherboard because the card will be so close over the top of the connections that a straight connector will not work. I have done this with the EVGA 9800GTX+ Superclocked Edition. If you need a recomendation for a new power supply then go with the PC Power and Cooling 500 watt (Dell Edition), it's shorter then the standard 500watt and will leave you a bit more room behind your DVD/CD drive and also help with cable management.
