x64 sound and video codecs

Hi all!

I'd like to use virrtualdub 64-bit to compress my movies from DV AVI to something less storage-hungry.

If anyone'd pointed me in the right direction I'd be really happy

there are several options

It really depends on how you intend to use the video later on. DV AVI is an ideal format because it's a loss-less format and if you work with video a lot I'd be inclined to keep it at the format.

So, share with me what you intend to do with the video and I could offer other sugegstions.

DV AVI typically is created by mini-DV tape camcorders...is that where you got it from?

I'd like to keep them stored in a smaller format, and in a format we know won't disappear from the compression market in quite some time. Also preferrably something that Adobe Premiere will be able to edit in the future.

I guess the alternatives are:
*Flash video (need higher bitrates)
*Wmv video
*mpeg4

if it is some personal footage....think about the future...back the important stuff up as is.
any other 'normal' stuff can be compressed down. of the three u listed...mpeg4.

also divx and xvid aren't going anywhere for a while

flash video = BIG no no

I store mine on the tape in DV-AVI format. Small, compact and not compressed.

Like vinyl record players, I have no doubt there will be external Mini-DV players that hook up to the PC (other than your camcorder)

Other than that I would recommend at least DVD compatable Mpeg 2 files and possibly stored as data files.

When I recently had some old 8mm family film digitised I ask then to store it as a data file on DVD.

For longer storage I would recommend an archival quality DVD for the more serious storage.

My aim is to have more external storage hard drives...it seems reletively cheep and secure these days

Just to correct myself there...DV-AVI is of course, compressed to an extent...
