Hello all...
Since the last month im strugling to make windows update work again with no exit at all.
I did follow every single instruction that I found in the forums everything but nothing.
First thing is I dont have windows vista dvd so i cannot reinstall from it. I had a back up but its completely useless.
I have a oem key that was coming with the pc.
So well, windows update dont want to work anymore.

"Windows could not search for new updates"
Errors found:
Code 80070490 Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

Curious thing is it sais i dont have any currently update installed in my pc anymore. Few days ago the list was full with updates and now I dont have any on the list.
For make it worse now my system restore tells me that i dont have any system restore point so i cant restore to any point before i get all the errors and stuff.
Is there anything to do or try? Cos i am really stuck at it.
Thanks.

My Computer

1.Run cmd.exe with administrative previlliges and type:

sfc /scannow

when it finish type in console:

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

on your desktop appear sfcdetails.txt file.

2. Run Readiness Tool Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista, for Windows Server 2008, for Windows 7, and for Windows Server 2008 R2
if you will have luck this tool sometimes solve this issue automatically,if not it create

CheckSur.log file in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS

Both files sfcdetails.txt and CheckSur.log files attache to post

METHOD I

1.Open registry editor,find key HKEY_LOCALE_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing
and delete all subkeys which reference to KB954429.To do that you have first takeownership of this key (see this tutorials how to do that http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/67717-take-ownership-file.html

2.Download this file attachesd here View attachment ctfmon.zip ,unpack it and place to C:\Windows\System32 folder.

METHOD II
Try uninstall SP1 and reinstall SP1 and SP2 standalone versions from Microsoft Download Center (not from Windows Update)

METHOD III http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76256-system-restore-undo.html
You can try difference check points

METHOD IV http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.html
It will only work for you if your Vista DVD is integrated with SP1

My Computer

Tried metod 1. Still the same. Not working at all...

I cant do method 2 or 3.
For method 2: I cant see any update installed on my pc. In systems it says i have the sp1 installed but dunno why it dont apear in the list of installed updates. Not sp1 nor any other update.
For method 3 the pc says i dont have any restore check point done in the computer. Few days ago i had a lot of em and now i dont have any.
For method 4 all i get from it is " i need a vista dvd " and i dont have it. Packard Bell says :

"Hello, Thank you for contacting Packard Bell.

Regarding your enquiry,

Vista DVD's are not provided with the machine. This is because you have a built-in recovery system which replaces DVD's. However, if you wish, you can create your own by using the back-up facility "

But dont know tbh.

Address to method 2.This is possible if CBS components are corrupted, try uninstall it manually see METHOD III from here:How to uninstall Windows Vista service packs as a troubleshooting step

WARNING:To do that you have to download SP1 standalone version and place to any folder (i.e. C:\Temp -if you don't have this folder just create it)

I don't know you can replace your DVD or not How to replace Microsoft software or hardware, order service packs and product upgrades, and replace product manuals
If your DVD is only image (not full installer with preregistered system) you can't replace your DVD :(

My Computer

Hehe i was already trying that Address to method 2.This is possible if CBS components are corrupted, try uninstall it manually see METHOD III from here:How to uninstall Windows Vista service packs as a troubleshooting step

But i was failing because i didnt know that i had to download the sp1 and put it inside temp.

Hehe gonna try then i post my results in a while.

I have a vista dvd atm in my hands but dont let me upgrade because it says my version is newest than the on ein the dvd... And im scared to format and install clean because my key is oem and dunno what is going to happens... Anyway lets try it now and i post back in a while.

You have to estimate also you have x64 system and commands will be a bit different what this article say:

If you have already SP1 in C:\Temp folder

you have to type following commands (if it is English Vista)

C:\temp\Windows6.0-KB936330-X64-wave0.exe /x:C:\temp

md sandbox

start /w pkgmgr.exe /m:c:\temp\Windows6.0-KB936330-X64-wave0.cab /up /s:sandbox

There are small errors in this article too  ,for unexperience user it important.

My Computer

Going to try all again the download and the steps. I couldnt get it working this morning.
What im doing at this moment, i made another partition and gonna install vista on it. Gonna put active the partition after and give the rights of a boot partition.
If that works and i can get vista working fine i will format the original c partition and just have it as a simple.

Will do that if after trying again the steps for uninstall sp1 fails.
I did that before and it was doing nothing at all :s

I hope it works this time.

My Computer

I did the format in D: installed the vista 64 there. All worked fine.
I did call Microsoft and id tell them what happened and stuff... They asked me for the key and without question or problem theyd activated windows. My key was all right a legal key so there was no problem.
the pc work really fine now better than it did before. With a clean install and i put already all the updates (is working really fine now ) now everything is all right.

Theres nothing better than have your own dvd tbh hehe...

But if you can read me flavius, i have all the pc clean but still have some bits of the old windows in C:\ is not leting me format or delete them. Is there any way to do it? My new OS in on D:\ and is working really fine. I swear that the pc is way lots faster than before.

Thanks again for all your answers.
