Hello Rodredrum,

Do you have a Applications and Drivers disc that you would have created from your OEM recovery partition? If you do, you can use it to install the correct drivers for your computer from it.

You can also check at your laptop manufacturer's website to find the drivers for your specific laptop model.

Hope this helps some,
Shawn

It looks like the problem is that you have a Toshiba OEM Vista installed on a Sony VAIO which has the wrong drivers of course. ;)

You should restore your OEM Vista instead for everything to work as it should. You can restart your computer and tap F10 every other second until you enter the VAIO Recovery Center from your hard drive OEM recovery partition.

that happened to me once, though on a desktop. i was helping my mother with her compaq presario and was trying to instruct her (over the phone) to reinstall her os via the compaq restore disc. problem was that she used the wrong discs. the os loaded fine, the computer started, but had all kinds of problems with hardware--as the image on the restore disc was for a different computer altogether. i could not remove the offending drivers and install the proper ones, as the computer, figureatively, was no longer a presario, but the computer from which the image was for.

you're in the same spot, it appears--you have a viao, hardware-wise, but the image you loaded was a toshiba, so, in effect, you have a toshiba.

since your hard drive got nuked and you no longer have the recovery partition, you'll need have to purchase a recovery disc from sony (if manufacturers still do that) or you'll need to install vista via retail or oem disc, and download all of the apps and drivers from sony's website.

i have no idea how much and don't know if manufacturers still make them. when i bought the right restore disc for my mother's computer from hp, it was like 19.99 usd for the disc and shipping. however, two years ago, i purchased an acer aspire laptop and no discs were included. i had to make my own (after the first start, a prompt appeared infoming me that i needed to make them). i think most, if not all, manufacterers are placing the responsibility of obtaining recovery discs with the consumer now.
