i'm having an issue with connecting to my router. the only way i can connect is if i go directly next to the router. but, i can't connect in my room.
when i try to connect in my room i get this message: "Windows association failed because Windows did not receive any response from the wireless router or access point"

Also, when i am connected in my room i get disconnected for a least a few seconds at a time. it says local only.

i have the following:
OS: Vista Home Premium x64.
Laptop: HP Pavilion Dv5-1000us.
Router: 2Wire Gateway.

Several Questions:

How far away is the router from your room?

Do you have any thick walls?

How old is the router?

Does this only happen on your PC?

Have you fiddled with the router settings recently?

This sounds to me as if either your wireless card or your router is not working properly.

Make sure the router firmware is up to date and that your PC's Wireless card driver is up to date.

I would also try, if its not too much hassle, restarting your router or possibly if it still isn't working after trying all the pre mentioned solutions resetting your router to factory defaults.

Post back with your results.

If it cant associate with the router that basically means it cant find it on the network according to the DHCP or static settings...

^^^ Has the correct info. I would follow those steps and reply back with more info when that is completed.

Microwaves interfere with WLAN waves. Are there any ovens in between your laptop and router? Look for other interferences like cordless phones too.

And if that is the case we can assist you in changing the channel of the router so it does not interfere.

I have found out what the issue was. I was getting help from a friend on that issue. And, he could not figure out what was the problem. So, he simply asked is any huge metal around you? I told him I had a metal desk & he said that was my problem. So, now I have an ethernet cable running from my router to my room. No issues now.
