Windows Vista basic edition is Freezing!!!

:eek:I have Windows Vista home basic computer and it freezes everytime I get it to the desktop.I can never get to a web page.I have to keep hitting the power button to restart the computer and right back to freezing again.I have no idea what could be causing the problem.I have been using Norton Internet Security for almost a year and so many problems with Norton.I went to the device manager tonight clicked on show hidden icons.A yellow exclamation mark is by security processor loader driver and symantec vista network dispatch driver.Norton has stopped working like it usually does and then later starts back working again.Norton tells me that my subscription has expired but I have 36 more days left to go.I have tried some of everything from system restore, antispyware and adware free edition, msconfig to see what software may be causing the problem and still nothing.I cannot listen to music or anything.I need some help please. Thanks so much. This is soo annoying.I have to work in safe mode.

Hi,

If the Norton has expired or not, uninstall it & you will be OK. On saying that you still need virus protection.

So, what are your plans for this?
  1. Update your Norton subscription?
  2. Install another software package?
You can log on to your norton account & verify your account & subscription details here: -

https://www.mynortonaccount.com/amsweb/default.do?product_lang=EN

Install an alternative to Norton like: -

McAfee—Antivirus, Encryption, DLP, IPS, Firewall, Email Security, Web Security, SaaS, Risk & Compliance Solutions

http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

And there are loads more for you to choose from.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Most internet security's will fight each other don't install one and then try and install another, there are many of good ones that are free that you don't have to pay for, along with what ever one you chose also download this one it is free also.

Malwarebytes

After downloading malwarebytes run a full scan and let it run by it's self.

Please download TFC by Old Timer TFC - Temp File Cleaner by OldTimer - Geeks to Go Forums and save it to your desktop.
Save any unsaved work. TFC will close ALL open programs including your browser!
Double-click on TFC.exe to run it. If you are using Vista/Windows 7 right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator.
Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process and let it run uninterrupted to completion.
Important! If TFC prompts you to reboot, please do so immediately. If not prompted, manually reboot the machine anyway to ensure a complete clean.

Next, let's flush the DNS cache and restore MS's Hosts file:

Copy and paste these lines in Note pad.

@Echo on
pushd\windows\system32\drivers\etc
attrib -h -s -r hosts
echo 127.0.0.1 localhost>HOSTS
attrib +r +h +s hosts
popd
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
netsh int ip reset all
shutdown -r -t 1
del %0

Save as flush.bat to your desktop. Right click to run the batch file as Administrator. Your computer will reboot itself, once again.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop
|MG| Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.50.1 Download
* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. Copy and Paste that log into your next reply.

Thank You Jacee but when I went to the link you gave me to download Temp file cleaner by old timer I got the same message again C:\Users\myusername~1\AppData\Local\Temp\j1QQjOk5.exe.part could not be saved, because the source file could not be read.

Try again later, or contact the server administrator.

I do not know what else to do because I try to download in safe mode and it never works.

You need to flush the bad DNS cache and restore MS's Hosts file.

Copy and paste these lines in Note pad.
@Echo on
pushd\windows\system32\drivers\etc
attrib -h -s -r hosts
echo 127.0.0.1 localhost>HOSTS
attrib +r +h +s hosts
popd
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
netsh winsock reset all
netsh int ip reset all
shutdown -r -t 1
del %0

Save as flush.bat to your desktop. Right click to run as Administrator. Your computer will reboot itself.

Now see if you can download the two apps from my above post and report back.

I copy and paste the info you told me but one thing I did make a mistake and not do was save it to the desktop I didn't want to delete the flush.bat from the documents so I right clicked on flush.bat in the documents, the computer shut down and restarted.I went back and tried to download the malwarebytes-anti-malware and I got this C:\Users\myusername~1\AppData\Local\Temp\FKvUiRON.exe.part could not be saved, because the source file could not be read.

Try again later, or contact the server administrator.

Try to download Temp file cleaner and got this

C:\Users\myusername~1\AppData\Local\Temp\sD60pTjJ.exe.part could not be saved, because the source file could not be read.

Try again later, or contact the server administrator.

That is malware.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, but re-name it to chocolate.exe before saving it to your desktop
