Im running an AMD Athalon 64 X2 4200 with 4 Gigs of RAM Nvidia Gforce 8800 GTX and two SATA 32 gig hard drives .I recently reset my bios on my ABit An9 32X motherboard and havent updated it (not sure if thats the problem, cant find a frickin floppy drive that works). I then set up a Raid 0 and installed the driver. I then set up Vista and all was well. Next, I downloaded the 111 Windows updates and tried to install them. It broke my PC. I used system restore. I tried to figure out which update is breaking my PC. After repeating this process, I found that the Security Update for Windows Media Format Runtime 11 for Windows Vista for x64-based Systems (KB954155) is definitely breaking my PC. I get this error: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file

Hal stands for "Hardware Abstraction Layer." It is software that enables Vista to communicate with your hardware. As a system file, it is one of the files that the System File Checker can repair.

Boot up. Go to the Command Prompt. Right-click on it and "Run as administrator." Type in sfc /scannow. You might have to do it a couple of times for it to work.

If the problem persists after, say, three tries, I'd run a checkdisk on the drive.
