This has probably been thrown around several times but i'm looking for an answer to my specific case.. i have an hp laptop media center softwear included hp dv208nr entertainment pc

I did a windows automatic update now its stuck in a continuous loop .. system boots to windows update configuation stage 3 of 3 0% then goes to 99% and reboots . repeats until system freezes up..

also the repair my computer option from the advanced boot menu is now missing , hp provides this with all there computers........

I called microsoft directly, they said since a windows update kill my comp, there gonna send me a vista premium 32bit install disk free of charge..

Now the actual Question begins lol

after i get the install disk and have a mircosoft tech take me threw the repair will i loose my media center softwear ?

Also will the tech be able to repair the missing "repair my computer file" ?

or am i gonna have to replace that file on my own?

thank you in advance,
Brian

1 It depends on what they make you do. If they give you a repair install, you probably will not lose anything. If they make you reinstall Windows, you will most likely lose everything.

2The repair computer file that you refer to is (I think restore factory specs or just repair ) if so, that will not be replaced, that was put there by the computer manufacturer and not MS.
If you have an install DVD, that will give you the same help as the factory specs option. You can, in addition use it in lieu of the computer repair option.

yes the missing file is the one you use to get system restore, without haveing to use a boot disk or install disk.

So basically this windows update removed the repair my computer option provided by my computer manufacture...?

How can this happen ?

So if i do a complete reinstall, i will loose any software provided by the manufacture? for example " windows media center "

Can i get this software back for free from the hp website ?

I did not understand the question the way it was worded.
System restore is part of the OS. When the computer is fixed you will have system restore back.

Regarding lost software, at worst HP will charge you cost for a new DVD.
I am assuming that the DVD that MS will send you will be a regular install DVD. No programs etc.
May I suggest that you wait, until you see what you get and then we can give you a more definitive answer.

i ordered a recovery disk from hp for my series/model of laptop, so it should come with all the software and drivers that come for this computer in factory form. it was $16.xx not bad for a garentee that youve got all your drivers and origional manufacture software..

thanks for your help and ill update this post when i get this issue resolved

If you go to a Microsoft distributor and buy Vista OS, there is not software, it is just the OS
If you buy from your computer MFG, you must ask what software is included.

That being said, those in the know, want the OS without the software, it is called bloatware. It slows down the system etc.

There are a few perfectionists that will buy a computer with Windows 7, preinstalled, with bloatwared. They go out spend another 125 dollars for the OS without bloatware, but the choice is yours.

If this is what you ordered and you did so through the Manufacturer, then I would bet a lot that it is a Manufacturer's Recovery Disk with all the additional software (they should be able to tell you what besides Vista itself is included) to make it just like it was when it was brand new and shipped from the factory. That plus the price - I sincerely doubt you could get a genuine Vista full Installation Disk regardless of the version of Vista (which is the retail version) for $16 (if they even had one available for sale).

In any event, it should become clear once you begin the installation (or it may say so on the disk).

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

While I agree with Lorien, I was trying to make the point, that it was NOT guaranteed that the disc contained the bloatware. If it is important you should ask to be certain.
