Windows update and install issue

Hello-

I tried to update the service pack 2 a while back, I think I may have shut it down before it properly installed. My computer works fine. But when I go to shut it down, it keeps asking me to install 16 updates. Which I have done many times, but the updates never seem to take.

Also my Windows update is not working. When I try to use it I get the following message:
"Windows update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not currently running. You may need to restart your computer."

I have restarted my computer many times, also I have gone into services and it says Windows update service is 'started' it's start up type is 'Automatic (delayed)'. I have stopped the service and restarted it, but that does not seem to help.

Any help is much appreciated, Thank you:)

Probably you have issue with other service. It's pitty you didn't say what kind of error code have you returned - I can only suspect 80070424 or 80246008,without details defficult to say any more.Prepare log from VistaSysInfoTool http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/176785-vistaforums-sysinfo-tool.html

I have a similar issue to the OP (Original Poster), except I do have SP2 installed, and I did not ever shut down prematurely. I am not sure what caused this, and I cannot seem to find any solution.

You asked for an error code, however, none is given. It simply gives a message "Windows update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." This does not come up in an error message window with the red X Icon, but instead with the blue i icon. Obviously, microsoft is not treating this as an error, but as basic information.

I have run several scans of my computer for viruses/spyware/registry. All come up with good reports. I have checked my services and all seem to be running as the OP stated. I am wondering if there are other services that need to be running that are either not on my list, or that I should be making sure that they are running in addition to windows update service.

Hello !!

There is a great article from Microsoft that would help you in fixing this problem.
Error message when you check for updates on the Windows Update site: "0X800A138F: There are no updates available at this time" I would say it had 98% success rate with this article.

Hope this helps,

I guess you didn't notice the part where I said that it does not show an error message. What you posted is an error. What I posted claims there is a service that is not running. They are two totally unrelated problems.

Hello !!

It doesn't matter if your getting the error message or not for certain issues the troubleshooting steps remains the same. Basically that article will refresh all the dlls and registry entries for Windows Update so whatever issues we have sometime it used fix it if it's not something serious. it's worth a try.

Hope this helps,
Captain
