Windows Messenger error

Alright Long story short.
I.E caught a virus, I switched to firefox and BLOCKED OFF I.E
Windows messenger used I.E to connect.
It keeps saying that there is a proxy issue which is understandable...
How can i change windows messenger to work with firefox?
Or any solution would be great.

[Also it notes a keyports error]

Welcome!

You should run a virus scan, hopefully that will cure it also. I recommend Malwarebytes for an on-demand scanner.

The thing is i tried it with Norton and it wont pick it up. I'm not sure why. It's one of those classic viruses that make up a fake PC safety program and constantly spam you saying you have threats... it stopped after i switched main browser to Firefox. Since then I haven't had any issues... just MSN/Live messenger not working. =/

Hmmmm, i tried the malware bites thing... it came up with nothing as well. Maybe i should be more detailed? This virus or w/e it is i think is connected to a file responsible for connecting I.E to the internet because it asked me to give it permission to work or not the first few times (before i swapped to firefox) but when i accepted it started pop ups and the whole 9 yards... when I declined it the I.E didnt work... but my IMing programs and everything else did and of course i hadn't any pop ups.

I tried to find this specific file it kept prompting permission for but i cant find it anywhere or in search. Nothing picks it up so Im really lost.

Alos I appreciate the help you are giving me cause I know this MUST be getting annoying.

Do you know where the virus is? Is it doing things? run a netstat -a and post output.

Check msconfig and see if you find any weird things on boot (such as windows processes in all capitals or too many svchost)

If you know where the file is or have a hunch about how you got it, check in the registry for clues.

Bro, i appreciate the help... But I am not computer literate at least not with the lingo or how to do anything you just said. Consider me a noob, and please help guide me.

Open up the run dialogue (Win+R) and type msconfig. Look in the startup tab, to see if anything funny is there.

There is a good register of windows processes and viruses:
Process Library
The critical windows processes are few enough to memorize and recognize quickly (such as winlogon.exe, services.exe and so on) and the others can be looked up with that liutilities site. If you checked all boot-up and running processes with taskmanager (ctrl+alt+del) and msconfig as jonathan described ensuring that all processes have at least correct names (Case matters), then you're good on your way to check the computer for evulne22.
