Windows Mail problem... starting yesterday I'm no long able to get Windows Mail to function within IE 8. Now, when I click Mail, nothing happens. I have verified Windows Mail is set as my default mail pick but it does not work. Some setting must have changed but I don;t know how to check this out further......hoping for a clue as to where I might check or change so this simple function is enabled again. Thanks for any help........................Marv

Welcome Marv

Have you tried with another browser? It would be easier if we knew if it was a mail problem or a broswer problem.

Thanks Rich....................very good question and I should have mentioned I'm able to get my mail with Thurderbird. I had previously also set up a shorcut for Windows Mail on my desktop with also works. My problem seems to be only inside IE 8. It's with IE 8 open that when I click on little "read mail" icon that it no longer opens Window Mail as it has for the past year or more. Also, my OS is Vista Business which I've had no problem.

OK thanks for sharing.

Tools>internet options>advanced>reset

You will be removing all the IE add-ons. It should work now.

You can replace the add-ons as you need them.

Either way report, back. We can share your happiness or look for other solutions

Rich...............thanks for the suggestion, but sorry to report it made no difference. I re-booted, starting IE 8 but the mail icon still does nothing, odd. Hope you might have another suggestion................Marv

Not what I wanted to hear, so we move on.

Think back, when did it start and what happened about that time? New anti virus, new program? Any strange behavior shortly before the problem?

Morning RIch...........this problem began a few days ago. Yes, I had downloaded a few little programs to check out but have now deleted them. I had also done a backup of my laptop. Problem still remains. Not sure if this is a browser problem or something set wrong in Vista but the Win Mail program seems ok in that I can open it directly (outside of IE 8) and all works ok. Hope there are some other settings I can check. Thanks for your interest and assistance.............Marv

Morning Marv,

Sorry that you are still having the problem, but nice to get to chat again.

As we progress more and more information becomes available. We know it is a problem with IE8, as Thunderbird works fine.

Do a system restore to a point that everything worked properly and before you installed the new programs, I do not want them to return.

System Restore - Windows 7 Forums

The above works for Vista as well as 7.

I expect good news tomorrow morning. None of this sorry it did not work stuff.

Take care my friend.

Good Morning RIch..............good news, I have the mail function back. I was not able to go far enough back with restore points but I decided to just do a full HD restore. And, while I now need to reinstall and update a number of applications, the mail problem is resolved. Thanks for your assisstance. Wish I had found what the actuall problems was but will just track this issue for a while and see if others learn what had been messed up initially. Have a great week and thanks again for your interest and help..............Marv

You did the right thing. If SR did not work, I would have reinstalled the mail client then, I was out of options. I try avoid using that extreme remedy, but sometimes it is necessary. I am glad that it did work out. Hope that all your email brings only good news. Take care, my friend.
