Please excuse me if I do not use proper technical terms, but I am a real computer dummy.
Last month I replaced my laptop with a new Dell 1420 on Vista. Previously I was using an elderly Dell on XP. The new Dell came loaded with Windows Mail rather than Outlook Express, which I had used quite happily through several years on 98 and XP.
Windows Mail appears quite satisfactory, except for one serious issue.
WM decides to freeze up often during the day. I cannot send/receive, and cannot access the various folders. My only recourse appears to be to close WM and call it up again, and it then works fine until it decides to quit again. This is particularly frustrating when I have just drafted an email and attempt to send it.
Being an old timer my computer use is quite limited -- email, browsing, Word and Excel are about it. No big downloads like music. It is possible that this lockup happens after I go over to the 'Net, but even then it is sporadic. It happens many times during a typical day of use.
I use AVG anti-virus (the "unfree" full version). After reading the great general hints here I disabled email scanning for 24 hours -- no improvement.
Can someone out there give me some advice on this? It would be much appreciated.
