Windows Live One Care Safety Scanner Hanging

Hi,

I have been trying to run Windows Live One Care Safety Scanner (beta for vista) I can successfully install and run it but when it performs the scan and it reaches 97% completion the program hangs. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software. I thought the problem might have arisen due to vista's securitythen reinstall th features so I first made sure to run internet explorer browser when I re-downloaded the scanner files. However, this has made no difference... the scanner still installs and runs but again upon reaching 97% completion hangs.

I am interested to know if anyone else has encountered this problem and better still if anyone knows how to resolve it.

Any input much appreciated.

Hi jonin and welcome to Vista Forums

As you have stated in your post, this is a Beta program and, as such, might still have the odd bug in the code that prevents the program from working as it should. Have a look at the following: Windows Live OneCare Help Center. In particular, take a look at the 'Connect with the Community' section. Here you can send feedback to Microsoft about the issues that you are having, and you can also check the relevant forum to see if other people have similar issues and, if so, what they did to resolve them.

Contacted Microsoft about this issue and waited two days for a response only to be informed to try search the forums for relevant answers similar posts or to phone them...

so basically still no answer to my query.

I would therefore be interested to know if this is a common issue at least on the x64 vista platform or is it just me.

Anybody else experienced this problem with the scanner hanging?

Again any fresh input here much appreciated.

Hello jonin, sorry your having problems.

For starters let me say I am a microsoft fanboy through and through.

I love Vista, and run it on all 10 of my systems.

That said I have to admit I havent heard very many good things about their Onecare security suite. I wish it was otherwise as I would prefer to run my system with as much pure MS software as possible.

Since you have a beta version of Onecare I hope you didnt have to pay for it $$.

I suggest you try a different security solution that is a little more tried and true.

If your willing to pony up some cash you cant do any better then ESETs NOD32 anti-virus program. If cash is an issue then Avast has the free market sowed up tight. Its the only free AV I put on my clients systems when they request a free AV program.

Comodo is one of the best firewalls you can get, and it is also free for home users.

Combined with some good spyware and anti-malware apps(all the best are free as well) your system will stay bug free.

Though don't get me wrong... I'm quite a Microsoft fan too but find myself getting frustrated with x64 compatibility issues... this beta scanner has been working fine on my vista 86 system but not my main one which runs x64 platform. Maybe I am completely wrong but I have always found the scanner to be good at least detecting if not removing virus threats off my system when my default anti virus program (AVG 8) has been exposed. I am just trying to establish whether other x64 users have experienced this issue.... because then that to me would indicate it was more of a common bug related issue as opposed to the actions of a crafty virus?

Hopefully one day either way I will be able to re-gain use of this scanner because I do like.

I am having the exact same problem on my sisters x64 machine. Driving me nuts too. Safety scanner rocks on my 32bit but on the x64 it hangs at 97 and 98 percent. Any Answers yet?

While the machine will hang when using the safety scanner on 64-bit Vista, if you let it run long enough...and I am talking about overnight here, it will finish.

Then it will display several thousand registry errors, but when you click continue or fix or whatever to proceed, nearly all of them will be reported back as errors, but it will fix the errors commonly seen when using 32-bit.

hi i have same problem using the scan but in my case its only the registry scan that is hanging the other scans seams to work ,
i never had problem when i scan my vista home basic 32bit.
other thing i think its strange, when run it it stuck in 96%the registry scan
then i open task manager to close it cos it not even wont be closed the windows,
when i look cpu usage goes 70% even 100% when i open it but just a sec it comes down 70% and my pc make strange sounds wile it runing .
sorry for my bad eng but anyone find the solution for the problem ?

I've also tested it and experience the same problem.

I thought that it was really not responding (freezed) but I let it do what its doing, next day I found it finished and reporting malwares and viruses found in my system.

I say that I could be because its trying to heal the infection and making decision to delete or not that causes the freezes.

To confirm the issue, I'm running it on Vista Ultimate 64, and it is indeed way too sluggish. But it does seem to be running so I'll let it do its thing and check in the morning.

i have ultimate x64 sp1
i ran the Full Service Scan from OneCare safety scanner beta
it did appear to hang during the Registry scan, but i let it continue to do it's thing.
after two hours, it finally finished. it said that there were a butt load of errors. it seemed to "automatically" fix them, however.
so, the process does complete from start to finish.
the serious problem occurred when i decided to upload the results to Microsoft. that's when the true hang occurred.
i would recommend not using this program for your Ultimate x64 system.

Suggestion-

I am a Onecare perpetual beta tester, and I long ago removed the program from my computers. It offers inferior protection. I had to regularly run Eset NOD32 online scanner as a secondary scanner to clean up the malware it missed. It was a pain in the butt, and left me without confidence in the program.

I suggest replacing it with either NOD32 4 or Avira Antivir for piece of mind.
