I had a very strange problem with Windows Live Photo Gallery which had been bugging me for a while and I can’t pin point exactly when it started. I searched the net looking for a reason or solution but could not find one so decided to see if I could fix it myself. I finally managed to find a solution and thought I might share it here in case anyone has the same problem or has a better solution.
For some reason when ever I used WLPG on Vista Aero kept disabling and enabling itself randomly, making the screen flicker and go black. It was getting very annoying and I thought it may have been a graphics driver issue. I tried different driver versions but nothing seemed to work. Eventually I noticed that every time I started WLPG another process started running called WLXQUICKTIMEHOST.exe. Every time it started aero would disable, so I tried ending the WLX process through task manager and surprise surprise aero came back on! Now I don’t have quick time or any apple products installed on my machine so I was wondering where this was coming from. I finally realised that there are 3 files in the WLPG programme folder relating to quicktime. My guess is they are there for viewing certain video formats in the gallery?
I took a long shot and deleted the 3 files and restarted WLPG…success! I double checked in task manager and no WLXQUICKTIMEHOST.exe was running and aero no longer randomly disables. I don’t know if this is a permanent fix as I only done it last night…but I will see how it goes.
