Hello Forum,
I had to re-formal my hard drive due to some difficulties I have been having. When I restored my original OS I found that I had 2 Internet Explorer icons. I would like to be able to use the X32 bit version of IE as my default browser. How can I accomplish this? I have one game provider that runs only on X32 bit, and I would like to be able to download their games. Thanks for any help rendered. I am running Windows Vista Home Premium Edition X64 bit SP2. :)

You have a 64 bit system, you need the 64 bit IE. There are some appl that you will also need 32 such as flash. The switch from 32 to 64 should be automatic, as needed. There should be no problem with your game.

You can try changing the target of IE, from 64 to 32 bit; Making a restore point first, in case of problems.

Just to correct you for a second. X64 bit and X86 bit refers to processor set of instructions. X64 is X86 a processor extension. So therefore, 32 bit and 64 bit are in the same category as the x86 instruction set. Therefore there is no such thing as an X32. X86 originally came from the intel 8086 processor. x86 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
If im wrong please correct me.

-Sorry for sounding like an a-hole by the way.

I think that the OP is referring only to IE. A 64 bit OS has both the 32 bit and 64 bit IE8. They are needed; flash for one needs 32 bit ver of IE.

Hi Rich,
Thanks for your reply. I don't want to mess up my computer where I have to reformat it again! I have one game provider that I cannot install their games whereas I used to be able to do so. I don't know if my X64 OS is the culprit or not. I would at least like to try to change to X32 target of Internet Explorer, but I don't have a clue on how to do this. I understand that I will need to make a restore point before making any X bit change just in case. Earlier I was in contact with a Microsoft Rep who I believe changed my OS to IE X32 bit and gave me the flexibility of chosing whatever OS (32 or 64 bit) I wanted for Internet Explorer. I could install all games from Oberon-Media after that.

Rich,

Forgive me if I sound overly cautious. When I follow the procedure you sent-will this make my Internet Explorer vers 8 my default X32 bit browser? How do I revert back to X64 bit browser if I need to.

My Computer

This actually should not make 32 the default. I built in a safety net. Things should be the same as they are now. When you want to use 32, you just click on the short cut that you will make. I have not done this myself and know of no one who has, so I cannot be sure of the results. That is why we start with System Restore.

and

I do not consider you overly cautious, I consider you wise. I do not even want to tell you all the safety nets I used when I installed Windows 7 from Vista.

Rich,

I installed X32 and tried to install a game in question. I still get the same error message, so I can pretty well rule out that my problem is not caused by not using X32. I received no help from the techs at Oberon-Media. I guess I am the only one that has had this problem?! Thanks so much for your patience and help. I really appreciate your efforts. :D

From MS, you were looking at the wrong cause of the problem. I just followed your lead and helped you get 32 IE to be available. Look at this.

Rich, You are talking way over my head. Here is a sample of error mesage I get whenever I try to instal an Oberon-Media game......
WINDOWS INTERNET EXPLORER
Cannot find 'file://C:/Program Data//Oberon%20 Media/110005373/118464810/Loading.htm'.
Each game carries a different group of numbers...

Your initial post led me to believe that using 32 bit IE would solve the problem, but that was not to be. As soon as I fully understood the situation, I posted with information that showed that you should be able to play the 32 bit game with no problem; the only intent of my last post.

If you never played the game on the computer, I would adivse to use the MS compatiblity center to make sure that the game was compatible, this is already known, since the game was played. Now we have to uncover the problem.

Am I mistaken, did you play the game prior to format? If yes, follow the next instructions.

Type cmd in search, do not hit search, right click and run as administrator. Then in CMD type sfc /scannow. Do you show any corruption?

HI, sorry to such a nuisance. I have played the game in question before. I don't know if applying the X32 bit has caused another problem or not? When I turn my PC on it will play for several minutes and the desktop loses it picture and goes to a grayish screen. I have tried to go back to the restore point I set up prior to loading the X32 command. The desktop will not stay on long enough to apply the previous restore point. Something is really weird going on here.

My Computer

Are you saying now that there are problems in addition to not being able to play the game?

In any event, look at my prior post and, do the sfc /scannow.,

Yes as I stated in my previous message. The desktop disappears after about 5 minutes. I was able to go to the restore point that you had me put in before running the X32 command. I got my original pre-X32 command screen. The X32 icon was erased off the screen. There must be something else at play causing my desktop to turn gray. I can access my mail & internet through built in keyboard
buttons these screens come. That tells me my monitor is probably not at fault. I am not a very good computer tech, and am at a stand still at this point. I can't think of anything that might cause the screen to go gray.

My Computer

If we use another approach we may beat this thing. Do the sfc thing and tell me the results.

What game were you trying to play? Was it one of the flash games or actual full screen games?

Rich,
I did a MSCONFIG and found all boxes checked. I disabled all boxes and I did not have the gray screen anymore, so evidently something in my startup is loading down the desktop. I'll experiment with adding more startups until I get the gray screen. I'll give you a shout if I find the culpert.
