windows installer

Well I did some research last night on my pc and found that the "windows installer" is not listed under services. I recently did a recovery from recovery disks that HP sent me. Is it possible to do a re-installation of Vista from the recovery disks to repair the install and get the installer? Or do I have to do a complete recovery again? Specs:

HP A1720n pc
Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit
1.86 core 2 duo
320hd
1tb secondary hd

Thank you all for your help!

The post mentioned above is the correct solution. The issue lies in the registry. If it does not work, or you do not trust them (for some strange reason) or all the files have been deleted, I can make you a registry script this evening :)

Thank you all for your replies. I do not have a valid restore point because this issue
came about after a system recovory. I do not have acces to any pc with a running Vista copy. The file windows installer is completly deleted for some reason. will another recovery from disks help?

My Computer

Create a system restore point now, so that you can go back after the changes are made.
The changes should work, but just in case.

You have no friends, or know anyone who has Vista?

You have the original Vista install DVD?

A recovery from the disks probably will solve the issue, probably, but if you stick with us, we can almost certainly fix the issue without another recovery. A few questions:

Is this computer completely restored a few days ago, and so your attitude is "I have nothing to fear [from a full system recovery] if I have nothing to lose"

You say that the Windows Installer Service is completely missing. The registry fix given in the link by richc46 will solve that.

You also say the file is missing. Really? If so, SFC in the link richc46 gave will fix it, if you upload the logs files to us.

Thanks!

To get the SFC logs
Open another elevated Command Prompt and paste this command into it:

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log

This will show all the files you want to see in the Command Prompt window.
Since that window is not very practical for a detailed study, you want to paste the content into a Notepad, Wordpad or Word file.
For that you right click on the Command Prompt window (any place is good) and click Select All. Then you right click anywhere in the window. Now this whole text is stored on the clipboard and you can paste it into a document file (e.g. Notepad) where you can analyze it.

Special thanks is given to WHS for this valuable information

Thank you for all your help, but I ended up doing a system restore from the recovery partition. It worked out perfect. I only have 1 more question. How do you
empty or delete the recovery drive. It is full and it keeps giving me a "d" drive low on recources. I know the recovery files are there but is there a way to clean it up and delete some files on it? When I use disk cleanup there are no files to clean.
