Windows Explorer not working

I have read through all the post regarding this problem. There have been many approaches but it doesn't appear the issue has been resolved often.

Symptoms:
If I navigate through my disk/directory I eventually get the "blue circle of death" followed by Explorer restarting. What is interesting is that if I navigate differently I often do not have a problem (i.e. via the directory tree instead of clicking on folders in the window).

To avoid the same first five posts I have done the following:

The issue is with Windows Explorer, not Internet Explorer. Even though I use Firefox, I have checked several times.

I have done virus scans, registry cleans, check disks, defrags, etc

I have looking in error logs which are not my area of expertise but not seeing anything as described from the other posts.

I believe it has something to do with the corruption of index database although I believe I have successfully rebuilt it and have tried turning it off.

I think it may also linked to the process whereby explorer processes how it decides and displays icons as you navigate. The reason being, I only have problems with Windows explorer and does not occur if I navigate via the tree or other applications where you can browse. It also began around the time I got a weird problem where icons on my desktop began resizing themselves. (which has "healed")

I am expecting that I will need to do a complete reload of Vista. My only hope is that someone might recommend a 3rd party app to use instead of Windows Explorer to manage my disks. I love Firefox and will never use IE again and would entertain that type of solution.

Thanks in advance.

I have spent too much time and more than I can afford trying to make Vista work. I began using computers in 1974 and Vista is the shoddiest piece of SW I have ever come across. The final insult is that assuming Windows 7 is the light at the end of the tunnel, Microsoft will have the nerve to charge for it. Next purchase will be an Apple.

Update:

I turned "Use Classic Folders" on in the folder options in the control panel and the problem has gone away. something must be corrupted so I guess I will leave it this way until it "heals".
