Hi McSanidev,

For Windows Live Mail (WLM), the contacts from Vista/Windows Mail will need to be imported to use them.

Contacts will have to be manually imported from within WLM.
Click Tools, Contacts, File, Import, Address book for current Windows User.

To see the Menu bar, press ALT+M and check Show all menus.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

What email program are you using?

Can you give more details on what happens when you try to use Contacts from WLM?

Windows Live Mail )WLM) does not use the contacts in C:\Users\(your username)\Contacts. It uses it's own. That is why they must be imported to WLM.

In WLM, you can open it's Contacts by the left pane Contact button or from Tools -> Contacts.

Check to make sure that Windows Live Mail has all of it's defaults set to it.

I'm having a similar problem. When I would display my contacts in the past there were tabs to click on for New Contact and New Group. Those don't appear anymore. Where did they go and how can I get them back. Without them I can't add any new contacts or groups.

Shawn,
You can add my thanks to those of others. Boy, how hidden and non-intuitive is that fix? I wonder how that problem occurs. Do you think this caused by some of the Windows updates that we're plagued with? I will keep these instructions in a safe place. Thanks again. Arty

You're welcome Arty.

Not sure if a Windows Update would cause it, but it happens when the folder template gets changed by mistake in the Contact folder from something.

Hello Arty, and welcome to Vista Forums.

This tutorial will help show you how to restore the "New Contact" and "New Contact Group" toolbar buttons in the Contacts folder.

Hope this helps,

G'day Shawn,

I believe that the 'loss' was as a result of a recent update for the 'new-look' Windows Live Hotmail web-based mail service[?], as the same event happened to me.

The Windows Live Mail contact email addresses themselves were retained, however, all other contact detail info [personal names, addresses, phone/fax numbers etc] had been obliterated.:sa:

Not really knowing just what to do, I opted to importing my contacts list from my Windows Mail account. The net result is that I now have one helluva lot of editing to do to the WLM contact list, because of the number of duplicate email addresses that it has.

The most annoying part of all this, is that there are a lot of WLM email addresses that I need to investigate further, because I cannot immediately recall the personal details of the addressees - some are personal, others are business, and sundry others. My only choice is to email each in turn and after outlining the reason for the email, then request the details I need to re-edit the contact file.

Before you ask, the WLM contacts folder has also been affected, and I am unable to access it, or the files in it. This is one that I just can't figure out.

Cheers, and thanks for your informative post. I will check-out your recommendations.
