Still, the RC does boot slower than Vista on my computers. Didn't try later versions though, but I'm still buying it for one of my computers since I'm going 64 while I already have Vista x64 on the other.

It seems to depend on the drivers, also I have had reviews show that the RTM boots a little faster than Vista. RTM is apparantly faster than RC or Beta by a noticable margin.

But Vista is also all the way to SP2 and performance has been a major factor in that refinement, so it's not amazing that it would start to show strong scores.

Just my laptop, my desktop is a Xeon Dual Core E3110 (3.0GHZ), 9800GTX, Original Raptor drive 150GB, 8GB DDR2, with two 22" Asus Wide screen LCDs.
My guess would be that it depends on what you have installed on the system. Most Win7 users today probably are still running a relatively sparse system whilst their Vista is fully loaded - like with 100's of programs. And that is why Win7 feels faster at first glance.
On one of my systems I really ruined shutdown/boot times by installing 2 vBox virtual partitions - on top of an already heavily loaded system. The system restart times went up to 300 seconds as compared to about 130 seconds before. And there was no shortage of RAM or disk space.

My Windows Vista x64 SP2 does just fine when I do decide to start-up or reboot. I just let it run 24/7 and a couple times a month reboot to clear out superfetch. If he would have provided documentation about some earthquake predictions he knows about down there, then I would have taken notice.
