Will not run updates

Vista Home Basic. Trying to check for updates comes up with error 0x8007051a. The link provided does not include this error number.
Each boot shows a "Configuring Updates" message. An immediate reboot after successful log on shows the same message.
I have done a full System Recovery to rebuild the OS but it gives the same error.

Naturally trying to install SP1 fails too.

Windows Update service is shown as "running".
Can anyone advise what my next step is?

Hmmmm, error is: Indicates two revision levels are incompatible.
Well, maybe a driver or program that are loaded at startup cause a conflict with other drivers or progs installed in your computer.

Launch msconfig (Start / Run)
Services tab: Hide M$oft services, untick the others
Startup tab: Untick everything.
Reboot and look if the error persists.

^No thats not it dmex. I'd like to correct you ^^.

Here's your problem(s)

You have several required services not running.

You have the service running, but its not for your account.

Here's how.

Run ->MSCONFIG

Now, go to the Services Tab.

Make sure that:

Background Intelligence Transfer (otherwise referred as BITS)
Windows Modules Installer (WMI)
Windows Installer (WI)
Windows Update
WMI Performance Adapter

are enabled.

Now that that's done, you still might have a problem.

Go to Control Panel -> Admin Tools -> Services

Now re-read the top services and go on each one of them and Rightclick -> Properties->Logon-> LOCAL SYSTEM ACCOUNT (The Top one) Is CHECKED.

The bottom one may not function properly. Hope your problems solved!

Hi dan,

There is no correction needed...That is not the proper procedure to reset the Windows Update components you have posted here :sarc:

If you want to know the correct method of resetting Windows Update please refer to this post ;) (http://www.vistax64.com/windows-updates/164241-windows-update.html#post764706)

AN automated way of resetting WU using the steps I described in the post I linked above is available here: AU Check - Home

The latest Microsoft WU Package I linked in my previous post automatically resets all Windows Update Components so resetting services manually is not needed...

Thanks for trying Dan ;)
