Why won't Windows Installer 4.5 work?

My cursor (Logitech cordless optical trackman, setpoint 4.8, Vista 64-bit, Maxthon 2) has been acting quite crazy on occasion (not always). It will jump from an intended target to another target that is to its left. Also, when brought to a yes/no button and left clicked, nothing happens. Moving the cursor ever so slightly causes it to jump left at a 45 degree angle. Bringing cursor back to target and left clicking, now works. Ans, sometimes icons in my tackbar don't open on the first click, they need a second click. Happens mostly in my browser, but also happens elsewhere. This odd behavior may have started when I updated my Nvidia card. Thinking here is that Setpoint 4.8 did quite connect with the updated Nvidia. So, I tried to download and install the newest setpoint, 6.0.

During instillation got the alert that "You are running a 32-bit installer in a 64-bit OS, please run correct installer." Well, my Windows Installer is 4.5, but I can't tell if it is or isn't for 64 bit. And to add fuel tot he fire, Logitech tells me that the instillation of the Setpoint application should be done by the logitech installer.

Any and all help gladly accepted.

Thanks, Captain. Should I remove my present Windows Installer before or after I download its replacement. I'm naively thinking that if I remove it before, I won't be able to install??? And, before I do this, how do I remove my present windows installer 4.5?

Yes. You have to remove the exisiting one. Then install the downloaded one.

I think your right i didn't think about it !! My bad. Maybe he could try this article it might work After you uninstall some software updates on a computer that has Windows Installer 4.5 installed, some assembly files may still reflect the updated version instead of the original version of the files. But i would how come it installed the worng Windows Installer with Service Pack 2.

I certainly would like to try what you suggest, but I really don't feel comfortable working with service packs. That is, unless it really is a no-brainer and easy to do. Perhaps, you could give me an idea of the remove/reinstall 4.5 pathways I should follow. And, BTW, if I screw up, will I do any damage or can I just start over again?

I have tried to install Setpoint again and again and again, but this time Ihave looked closing at what is happening....

First, the 32/64 bit intalling warning was from Logitech and not Windows. My very bad.

I do have Windows Installer 4.5 that was installed as a MS update back in Sept '09. I have installed Setpoint versions 4.72-64 bit and 4.80-64 bit without problems; so at this point I don't think I have a Windows Installer problem.

However, here's what happens when installing Setpoint 6.0 64-bit:
First, all antiviruses and such are disabled.
I instruct that the instillation go into my Public files (not Program Files as defaulted by Setpoint); however it doesn't make any difference, as the app installs into neither directory folder. Nonetheless, when the screen does open after executing the command, Windows Installer does open and says "Preparing to install..." The hour glass turns over, but ProcessHandler shows that nothing is happening. Canceling Windows Installer can't be done and the only way to stop the bugger is to kill the tree process within Process Handler.

Well, that's it. Care to take another swipe at this one?
