why our points are not moved to win 7 forum??

Ashvin Busviah

Vista Guru
Hi.. I joined the windows 7 forum and saw that there my points do not apply.. its like being in a new forum.. The problem is that its really difficult to be in two forums at a time.. and with all that support providing on the Vista forum when we will move to the windows 7 forum.. we will just be seen as new bies or normal user.. We either have a choice of supporting win 7 forum more and leave vista forum. as with time we will have more user to windows 7 than vista./. this is not very motivating.. I would like some thoughts from the forum administrator on that one and would like if the points or rep can be transfered to win 7 forum as being the same user for both forum...
Forum & support people thoughts??

cheers

Hi Ash,

As the Reputation points & badges are there as an indication of the amount of helpful posts and assistance given for that particular operating system it is policy to start the clock as a new user for members who join Sevenforums who are also members here.

This was the case with all the members from here that joined over the last year or so as knowledge of one Operating system does not guarantee knowledge of any other.

It is however not impossible for someone to be granted accelerated promotion by the Admins when it is obvious that there knowledge exceeds their actual current rank, This is also policy here.

I hope this explains the reasoning :)

I strongly agree with ash, and I was going to post the same thing. It takes a long time, and a lot of good posts to accumulate rep points, and I too don't want to have to start all over again as a newbie in, what is essentially the same forum. A number of very credible forums (like NotebookReview.com and Major Geeks) cover both Vista and Windows 7, and you don't lose all your points and status when you discuss one or the other.

I completely understand the reasons given by barman58 --- but I think if you looked at it another way, you would see that it isn't necessary to have the Vista forum and the Windows 7 forum as two completely separate forums. There's no reason why each can't be a section of one complete forum, so that no matter which OS you are using, you can discuss it, and keep the credit you have for discussing the other.

I know this apparently isn't how the Vista Forum was originally set up --- but I would hope that we're all forward thinking, adaptable people who would have room for change and modification in our thinking, when it helps the members of the forum, and doesn't hurt anyone.

Although I do understand the points that you guys are making, you might want to consider the following:
1. The REP points on the forums are really a reflection of the seniority on this forum (as barman says). And if those postings are particularily relevant and professional, the mods may decide to "upgrade" you.
2. It is possible and happens all the time that a completely new member starts posting very useful comments. Being new on the Forum is no reflection on the skill of the member - it could even be an MVP.
3. At the end of the day, most of us post answers in the forums because we like to help people and because we enjoy the community. The REP points are a nice feature but not essential. I know and participate in other forums where you can have any amount of postings and you still figure as "member". I never thought that this was a problem.

Valid points on all sides OK I've got a few points over here but when joining the Windows 7 forum I started from scratch, which to me was fair it was a new forum dealing with a new OS and there's no way I would have had the knowledge that would have been shown if my points from here had carried over to there.

That would have just been like I had a lot of knowledge about it because I was high up in the rep points, to me that would have been unfair making it look like I was sure to be able to help anyone just look how many points I've got.

My opinion is that the way things are now is very good, if you go to another forum you start from scratch and earn your rep by the standard of your replies and take it from there, if your good you will possibly be promoted by the admin as they'll see that your help if valuable to the smooth running of the forum.

OK I've had my 2 pence worth :D

Very well put, Joan. When joining a new forum, it is only fair to everyone else that you start from scratch as any reputation you receive will be based solely on your contributions to that forum. I can see where some people are coming from, though. Windows 7 is a development from Vista, and many of the techniques and tips work in both OSes. If I join a forum on Linux for example, I wouldn't expect to be classed and have the same reputation as a Guru just because I am over here.

7 being a complete different OS

Hmm, that is an interesting comment. My impression is that W7 is 95% Vista with a few GUI changes and better performance and possibly better reliability (remains to be seen). In fact, many people suggest it is Vista Release2.

Yes, exactly, and all the more reason why having both Vista and Windows 7 be under one forum 'umbrella' makes sense - especially since most suggestions made for Vista would probably work for Windows 7 as well. (And likewise, most Windows 7 problems could be solved by the same or similar solution as in Vista)!

Barman is correct....its a different forum regardless of how similar the OS might be.

say this was a GPU forum that supported the 9800GT for instance & z3r010 decided to create another forum for the 9600GT, would you ask your rep & rank to be carried across b/c the cards are very similar..?? :p

but, i'll ask the boss how he feels about carrying over your points. :)

You know its more about the participation than the OS. I started here and went quickly to win 7. I spent most of my time there when I came back here I didnt expect nor get my points from seven carried over here. The ppl who worked hard here deserved them more than I did. Now that I live on both sites its knid of workin out.

I think John has it right

thanks for all your thoughts guys. my concern is that we definitly need to move to forum wins 7 after a while.. and thus leaving vista forum behind.. it will be a like a more motivating factor to have both forum points join.. or the problem can be people in win 7 forum won't bother to help on vista forum or vise versa.. As the last time i posted a recommendation on win 7 which make sense but the problem poster tends to pick up the solution of the higher rated member which is fair.. but for us not..
Starting as a newbie on win 7 do makes sense but my point is "will people moving to win 7 forum" be bother to look back on vista forum..
This forum is reputated as being the fastest for replies acompaired to any other forums.. thinks should be like a reward for us guys who had worked hard here to have so credits carried forward
so the solution to help that is why our vista forum points can't be shown done in a different square below and the new added points for win 7 up"

Nice thought but i really don't think it matters. I am also active on another forum where I have 10.405 posts at this moment - but zero rep points (that does not exist) and the title is "member" - like everybody else except for the mods. It has never bothered me - works just as well.
I can tell you a funny story though. Once a mod had posted an answer that I thought would not work. So I posted a different solution. The OP came back and asked how come that a mod posts an answer and a "normal" member questions it. The mod is a friend and we had a good laugh (behind the shed).

I strongly agree with ash, and I think it DOES matter very much to a lot of posters. If our points can't carry forward to the Windows 7 forum, then at least, let us have the second box showing our points on the Vista Forum. Again, just like my suggestion above, of having the two forums combine points under one 'umbrella forum' -- if you at least had the second box, it wouldn't hurt anybody, and would help the "newbie" Windows 7 poster, who had a lot of value to the Vista forum.

Well said Patio, those have been my views all along we come here to help and get help if we need it.

You don't have to be here long to know who the knowledgeable ones are.

John has it right these are 2 different forums dealing with 2 different operating systems, regardless of how similar they may be, so being an expert with Vista doesn't always mean you're going to be an expert with Windows 7 so it shouldn't be assumed that you are and in my opinion carrying points over would assume the person knows more than they actually do.
Ok so probably some may have the knowledge but let them prove it by the help they give and if they're as good as they think they are their points and rep will soon climb to reflect that they wont need a leg up.

OK coming off my soap box and I've said all I'm going to say about it apart from John don't change a thing ;)
