Hi All,

I have an issue and I need your professional help. My board is an Asus P5QC...the most unstable board I have ever owned... Anyway, I got this board since November and it was not running it's best but the I had the basics running. In the past 3 months, I have re-installed Vista 9 times:sa::sa::sa: I was blaming Vista, but I notice that my BIOS for some weird reason is not displaying some option that I had before. Now my network adapter will not function properly.

I tried my old driver and the latest drivers, I installed it the way it is suppose to be installed and well...no success.

I tested all my cat 5 and they are all in good condition.
My router is functionning well, seeing that my other computers are working.

I am running out of patience and ideas. Any help wanted!

Thanks

You forgot to describe the actual problem. Apparently it's got something to do with your NIC, but without detail it's rather hard help.

My Computer

Oops!

Here goes, Vista keeps forcing the IP 169.254.X.X, even when I manually changed it to an other IP, it does not let it change it. The lights on my NIC indicates that the device is working, but clearly it is not.

My router is seeing the NIC, but it indicates "Unknown"
My latest drivers that I tested came from the Atheros website directly. I tested ALL the Asus available drivers with no positive results, I even went has far as flashing my BIOS...no changes.

Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks

The 169.254.x.y (APIPA) range is used by DHCP clients which can't successfully obtain a lease from a DHCP server, so one potential explanation for your condition is that the machine isn't talking to the router (its DHCP server) at the network layer.

What exactly happens when you attempt to set a static IP? Why does it "not let it change it"?

How precisely is your router "seeing" the NIC?

Has this ever worked?

Do you get better or different results if you boot to [safe mode + net]?

My Computer

Well when I change it to a "static' IP it shows the change I did as well as the "autoconfiguration" IP of 169.254.X.X. When I apply the "static" IP my router is seeing the PC but as an "unknown" Oh! by the way I change my DHCP setting in my router to match the IP Windows is giving to the PC (169.254.X.X) My other computer is working well with this configuration.

The PC was always online since I got it back in November, just recently, when I copied MAC files to an other HDD on my PC. After rebooting, that it is when I notice that my network adapter was on "vacation". Also I notice that some options I had before in my BIOS are not there anymore! In the boot option area, I had the option of setting up ALL my HDD has boot option now I only have one?!?!

Hope this helps!

Is your RAM FSB and voltage configured properly for your CPU? Do you have a decent power supply.

All my settings are stock...So I assume that all my voltage is good. The computer was running more or less great since November, my power supply is a 650W.

You use static IP on your modem from your ISP or on your desktops? 192.254 means your address is not setup properly.

What are you addresses and subnet. Did you set a static IP on your router? This router IP is your gateway.

My ISP sends me an IP that goes to my router from there I set my DHCP with specific IPs for my home network. My home network has been working this way for the past 5 years, but not since I copied a few files over to an other HDD on my PC they have since been deleted, but I do not think that was the problem and now no more communication on the World Wide Web!!

I just RMA the mobo. I think my Network adapter id FUBAR!!

but if any of you see what could be wrong let me know. Thanks.

Oh! I also tested it under Linux, with no better results, this is why I think it is more hardware issue then software.

static IP from your ISP is on the modem. Did you try directly connecting to the cable modem and not the router. Connect modem to your computer and reboot. See if IPconfig/all sees everything.

You can get to your router. That is your gateway.

router:
IP: 192.168.1.1
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

computer1: 192.168.1.100
subnet mask: 255.255.255..0
gateway: 192.168.1.1

eVGA 8800 GTS 640 MB video card
    Hard Drives
    SAS RAID
This is the problem. The PC does not accept the IP sent by the router. It keeps the 169.254.X.X IP. Again my other computer is working well, so I know that my router is properly setup.

Hard set the IP, mask, and gateway on your computer.

If your router is 192.168.1.1 make your computer 192.168.1.100, subnet the same, gateway is your router address.
