Solved Why is IE-9 is slower

Finally switched to IE-9 after much nagging from Microsoft. I find IE-9 to be much slower (taking longer) to open web pages than IE-8. I'm using Vista Ultimate x 64. Is there any way to speed things up? Understand I could install 32 bit IE-9; but will this really work, or create othe problems?

Hello and welcome. I am finding that using the 32 bit version works better for 64 bit systems, my neighbor bought a Windows 7 64 bit, but, that IE 9 64 bit version crashes , so , i have him set on IE9 32 bit and he is happy .

Thanks for the quick reply. I just checked my programs 86 folder and it looks like I only have IE-9 64 bit in there. Guess I'll have to download the 32 bit version and install it.

Yeah, my neighbor is a newbie, first ever computer, and i was getting rid of trash on it for him and installing good stuff, and i noticed when i opened up his icon for IE, it was a 64 bit version, so i used the 32 bit with no issues, and told him to not use that one version of 64 bit, he seems fine .

IE9 is both 32-bit and 64-bit by default - you have to have installed both versions.
Check the actual shirtcut you're using.
The 32-bit version should point to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe"
The 64-bit should point to "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe"

Noel is 100%, Vista x64 come with both by default, and uinact unless specificlly change, use x86 (32bit) IE by default, and that default is not able to be changed.

So I m almost 100% certain you were using 32bit IE. You can go to hep -> About IE to find out. 32 bit say nothing, 64 bit says 64bit.

With that said, IE isn't your slow down.

Thanks for the info. This is what I have installed now.

When I was running IE-8 there were two Explorer Icons in my 'All Programs'. Now that I have installed IE-9 I have only one Icon and in Programs 86 there is only one Internet Explorer...IE-9. Maybe it's me but I really believe IE-8 was faster in opening pages. It acts like it is scanning them for malware or virus prior to opening them.

Yup thats 32bit.

In 64bit Vista you have 2 "program files" folders as Noel posted. 1 copy of IE will be in each.

It might vary well be checking, I switched to 9 when it was beta, so i forget my setings, but they look default.

Have you tried the same sites on FF or Chrome?

Re IE9, is there any way to make [close current tab] the default instead of [close all tabs] when leaving a web site?
